U.S. Army Lt. Col.
Gary Kuhn, retired, a Vietnam War veteran who makes his home in Center Township, has been recognized for his military service by his hometown, Fredonia in Mercer County, and was presented with the key to Fredonia by Mayor Dan Nagel.Kuhn is the immediate past commander of the Leymone American Legion and continues to volunteer in many Butler and Fredonia military activities.Kuhn was drafted in October 1966, rose to the rank of sergeant, began Infantry Officers Candidate School at Fort Benning, Ga., and was commissioned as a second lieutenant, Infantry, in November 1969.He served with the 82nd Airborne Division, the 101st Airborne Division, the 193rd Infantry Brigade, Panama, and the 2nd Battalion (Airborne) 187th Infantry in Panama.Kuhn was a rifle platoon leader in Vietnam with the 173rd Airborne Brigade and with Charlie Co. 1st Battalion (Gary Owen) 7th Infantry, 3rd Brigade, 1st Calvary Division.He is a graduate of the Airborne and Ranger schools, Armor Officers Advance Course and the Army's Resident, Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.His awards include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal with “V” Device for Valor, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantry Badge, the Parachutists Badge, the Ranger Tab, the Meritorious Service Medal (3 awards), the Joint Service Commendation Medal and the Army Commendation Medal (4 awards).Kuhn's last assignment was as the senior staff officer for operations, multinational force and observers, Sinai Desert, Republic of Egypt, and he retired in August 1990 following this assignment.A graduate of Slippery Rock University, he recently retired as the veterans employment representative and CareerLink specialist for Butler County.He is a member of the Butler County military veterans committee and the honor guard for conducting military funerals. He is the current commander of American Legion Post 778 and a life member of VFW Post 249.
———Navy Seaman Recruit <B>Carl Klecha</B>, son of Carole and John Klecha of Hilliards, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.Klecha is a 2005 graduate of Moniteau High School.———Cpl. <B>Michael Horsman </B>has been discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps after four years of service, including one tour in Iraq and one in Afghan- istan.The 2007 gradate of Butler High School is the son of Bill and Tina Horsman.Horsman is married to Alexandra Brill Horsman from Fallbrook, Calif., and they will make their home in Butler.———Navy Seaman Apprentice <B>Benjamin Yute</B>, a 2011 graduate of Grove City High School, recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.The Butler Eagle publishes announcements of awards or honors received by area residents in the Armed Forces.
