Familiar foes

Knoch's King, Ross meet in tennis; Mars boys soccer handles Freeport

Knoch's Alyssa King and Brooke Ross each reached the semifinal round of the WPIAL Section 3-AA Singles Tennis Tournament at Vincentian Thursday before falling into today's consolation match — against each other.

King, the No. 4 seed, defeated Jessica Sebak of St. Joseph 10-1 before winning on an injury default to advance to the semifinal round.

King then lost to Maeve McAllister of Ellis School 6-3, 6-0.

Ross, the No. 6 seed, defeated Danielle Marino of Riverside 10-1 then downed Niki Rogue of Winchester-Thurston 10-7 before losing to Elle Belko Vincentian 6-4, 6-2.

The winner of the consolation match will advance to the WPIAL final.

• In the Section 2-AAA tournament, Butler's Courtney Gallagher won in the first round over Hampton's Rachel Harrison (10-0), then lost to Pine-Richland's Marlys Bridgham (10-1).

Butler's No. 2 singles player, Laura Brestensky, fell to Mars' Kaitlyn Craig (10-1).

Mars 214, Kiski Area 221 — At Rittswood Golf Course, Josh Bartley's 37 helped propel the Planets to the win.Mars (8-4) will take part at Sectionals on Monday at Buffalo Golf Course.

Karns City 10, Forest Area 3 — Justin Ryan scored four times and teammate Evan McGarvey had two goals and five assists to lead KC.Anthony Easley added two goals and two assists, while Andrew Johnston and Kaden Young both scored once. David Olszak earned the win in net.The Gremlins (2-1) will travel to rival Redbank Valley on Saturday.

Mars 6, Freeport 1 — Spencer Posey and Ryan Gralish each tallied two goals as the Planets (4-0-1, 3-0-1) outplayed the Yellowjackets (0-4-1, 0-3-1) at the Mars Athletic Complex.Ryan Kissinger and Michael Derouin also scored while Gralish and Matthew White chipped in with assists.Girls Soccer

Slippery Rock 12, West Middlesex 0 — Danielle Wissinger scored six goals and added two assists to lead the Rockets (4-1-1, 2-0-0).Also scoring two goals apiece in the win were Morgan Siebka, Ali Lotz and Alyssa Waryanka.Harley Boyd and Kenze Burkhart both had an assist.Girls Volleyball

Knoch 3, Freedom 0 — Celina Sanks had 12 kills and seven service points and Alison Rykaczewski added five kills as the Knights (2-2, 1-1) prevailed 25-8, 25-9, 25-7.

Freeport 3, Kittanning 0 — Ashley Sample had 18 kills and eight service points and Megan Sweeny nine kills and 10 points to power the Yellowjackets to the win in a battle of unbeatens.Taylor Schrecengost chipped in with 14 points and nine kills and Lynsey Gugino 12 points and 32 assists for Freeport (4-0), which hosts the Freeport Fall Fest Tournament Saturday.

A-C Valley 3, Clarion-Limestone 0 — Emily Quaill contributed 12 assists and eight service aces to the Falcons' win, which came by scores of 25-23, 25-10 and 25-16.Meredith Snyder added nine kills and seven digs, Alexis Linamen five kills, five digs and four aces.A-C Valley also won the junior varsity match 2-1, led by Danielle Kaufman and Jess Callender, who combined for eight aces.
