BUTLER TWP— The Butler County Community College women’s volleyball team improved to 11-0 recently with a 3-0 win over Westmoreland County Community College.

Scores of the match were 25-16, 25-21, 25-15. Christina Farmer had 14 kills, Danielle Lloyd 18 digs and Jessica Prelec 24 assists. The Pioneers host Potomac State at 1 p.m. Saturday.

SV grad Johnston wins harness raceCLEARFIELD — Seneca Valley graduate Shawn Johnston picked up his first win as a harness racing driver recently when he guided Crafty Friend to victory at the Clearfield County Fair.The victory occurred in a Pennsylvania Sire Stakes race.Johnston, 18, is an Evans City resident who followed his father and brother into the sport. He played soccer and hockey at Seneca Valley.

SRU mourns death of longtime coachSLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University is mourning the death of longtime assistant track and field coach Dave Labor, 61, who died of cancer over the weekend.Labor served as an assistant coach for SRU track for 17 years, working primarily with sprinters and hurdlers. He turned out 17 All-Americans and 66 individual PSAC champions.His funeral was this morning at Cunningham Funeral Home in Grove City.

Wulff family wins in West SunburyWEST SUNBURY — Anthony, Aron and Kayla Wulff all won their respective races in wheel-to-wheel offroad racing recently at the Rolling W Ranch.Anthony won the 1,600 Buggy class, Aron the Woods Buggy class and Kayla the 6-Cylinder Rally class.Adam McNeish of Saxonburg won the 4-Cylinder Rally class. Other division winners were Dustin Pittman and Bob Vavro of Jefferson Hills and Ben Barkley of Petersburg, Ohio.SV grad Smith shining for SoxSeneca Valley graduate and former Butler BlueSox catcher Kevan Smith is putting together a big rookie season in the Chicago White Sox farm system.Smith, a seventh-round draft pick by Chicago, hit .355 with nine homers and 48 RBIs while splitting time with Bristol, Va., and Great Falls, Mont.He went 4-for-6, including a two-run homer, in helping Great Falls defeat Missoula (Mont.) 12-2 Sunday to advance to the Pioneer League Championship. Great Falls is taking on Ogden (Utah) in a best-of-three championship series this week.Ex-SRU star Adams headed to fall ballFormer Slippery Rock University catcher-first baseman Matt Adams has been named Texas League Player of the Year and is one of seven St. Louis Cardinal prospects being assigned to Peoria of the Arizona Fall League.Adams hit .300 with 32 homers and 101 RBIs for Class AA Springfield this season as a first baseman. The Cardinals have prioritized him to Peoria, guaranteeing him ample playing time when the league begins play Oct. 4.Rivera collects 600th career saveSEATTLE — Mariano Rivera’s 600th save ended with a perfect strike. Horses 9-1-1 win on 9/11 at NYCNEW YORK — What are the odds?On the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks on Sunday, horses wearing the numbers 9, 1 and 1 won the first three races at Belmont.The New York City track served as one of the staging areas for workers and emergency vehicles in the days following the destruction of the World Trade Center.David Jacobson, the trainer at the stable that owns the first two winners, tells the New York Post that the odds “were probably about a million to one.”Actually, the pick three paid $18.60 for a $2 bet.
