Annual county farm tour will be on Sept. 24

The Butler County 14th annual Farm Tour is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 24th.

There are four stops on the free, self-guided tour: Metrick’s Harvest View Farm and Market, Lesney’s Dairy Farm, Daubenspeck’s Beef Farm and Brenckle’s Greenhouse.

You must visit all four stops to be eligible to win the door prize drawing. There are brochures available with a map to follow if you call 724-384-5270.

Metrick’s Harvest View Farm is an excellent place to start the tour. The farm is at 143 Eagle Mill Road near Mount Chestnut. The farm market features sweet corn, peppers, tomatoes, potatoes and pumpkins.

Bulk foods, jams, jellies as well as beef, pork, lamb and pasteurized poultry is available. A corn maze is offered for the youngsters. Visitors are able to view honey production in an observation bee hive. The Metrick farm is one of 38 in the Agricultural Preservation Program in Butler County.

The Lesney Dairy Farm is located next door to the Metrick Farm. Visitors are advised to enter the back driveway from Eagle Mill Road, Mount Chestnut. The Lesneys farm 900 acres. Grain is their principle product. The Lesney herd includes 45 milk cows and 25 calves and there are horses on the farm. The Lesneys grow corn, soybeans and alfalfa and also participate in the Agricultural Preservation Program.

The Daubenspeck Beef Farm is at 128 Stevenson Road in Connoquenessing Township near Route 68. Guy Daubenspeck is the fourth generation of his family on his mother’s side to farm the land.

The farm is comprised of 226 acres, and the Daubenspecks have 50 head of beef cattle. They also sell hay, grain and custom mixed livestock feed. The farm is also part of the Agricultural Preservation Program.

Brenckle’s Greenhouse operation is on Route 68 near the Butler Farm Show grounds. Recently the greenhouses have been remodeled with wider aisles, new flooring and a greater selection of products. Everywhere you look you will see a wide variety of colorful plants, flowers, herbs and vegetables. Fresh produce arrives daily.

Mark Saturday, Sept. 24th on your calendar for the 14th annual Butler County Farm Tour, which will last from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Ron Fodor is district manager of the Butler County Conservation District.
