Raiders, Fox Chapel similar, yet far apart in game results

JACKSON TWP — The Seneca Valley and Fox Chapel football teams may run similar offenses, but their Week 1 results were light years apart.

While Seneca Valley was rolling up 528 yards in a 47-0 win over Norwin, the Foxes struggled in a 35-10 loss at Baldwin.

Both the Raiders and Foxes run a no-huddle, spread attack.

It should make for an interesting meeting when Fox Chapel plays host to SV at James M. Burke Stadium Friday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

It took a few series for the Raiders to hit their stride last week.

“You always hope that you're sharp going into a game,” said SV coach Don Holl. “What was encouraging for me was we were making some big plays in those first few drives, but then we got sluggish at the end of them. We just need to finish.”

After a 44-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Brown to Jonathan Dorogy broke a scoreless tie in the second quarter, the Raiders received a huge contribution from their special teams.

Several Raiders chased Dom DiTomasso's blocked punt before Joe Duggan finally corralled it in the end zone for a 14-0 lead.

“There are various schools of thought on momentum,” said Holl. “Some people believe it doesn't actually exist, it's just a question of a good team consistently making plays. But if it does come into play, it certainly swings on a play like that.”

Another aspect of his team's first game that Holl was pleased with was the low number of penalties. The Raiders were flagged just four times for 30 yards.

“I was very pleased with our discipline,” he said. “Sometimes, you get effort penalties, but what we can't have is personal fouls, hits out of bounds and things like that. I thought our kids showed a lot of poise for the first game.”

Fox Chapel held a brief 3-0 lead last week thanks to a 35-yard field goal from Ben Mroz. Noel Wilson later scored the team's lone touchdown on a 7-yard run.

The Foxes have missed the playoffs seven of the last eight seasons, including last year's 1-8 record, after which head coach Bryan Deal resigned.

Former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Eric Ravotti has taken over the reins.

Graduated from last year's squad are quarterback Tony Pompeo (977 passing yards, two touchdowns) and running back Montay Green (1,108 rushing yards).

The Raiders defeated Fox Chapel last season, 40-14.

Ravotti could not be reached for comment.
