William G. 'Bill' Whittingstall

William G. "Bill" Whittingstall, 79, of Butler passed away Friday.

Born July 19, 1931, in East Liberty, he was the son of the late Charles A. and Violet Nellie Foulkes Whittingstall.

He retired from the U.S. Post Office, Pittsburgh branch, in 1990 after 37 years.

He joined the National Guard at 15 and served from 1947 to 1950. He also was a Korean War veteran, serving from 1950 to 1953 with the 11th Airborne, 187 Rakkasans Regimental Combat Team, 511th P.I.R.

Mr. Whittingstall was a member of the VFW, a lifetime member of the 11th Allied Airborne Division Association and a member of the Veterans of Underage Military Service.

He enjoyed hunting, taxidermy, small engine repair and spending time with his loved ones.

He is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 49 years, Doris M. (Wood) Whittingstall; his loving daughter, Debi J. (Gary) Schmiedecke; a sister, Helen Gerheim; the entire extended and adopted families, including sons, Gary, Rick and Billy, and granddaughter, Lena; dear friend, Mike Welch; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, two sisters, and Aries, his faithful and loving hunting companion.

<B>WHITTINGSTALL</B> — The family of William G. "Bill" Whittingstall, who died Friday, July 15, 2011, will hold a private memorial service later.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be sent to the American Lung Association of Pennsylvania.Arrangements are under the direction of <B>Thompson-Miller Funeral Home</B>, and Information and a private guest book are available at www.thompson-miller.com.
