Pirates place Maholm on DLPITTSBURGH — Pirates left-hander Paul Maholm is on the disabled list for the first time, sidelined by a shoulder strain.Maholm has lost four straight starts and five consecutive decisions, and Pittsburgh is 0-7 in games he started since the All-Star break. Over his past four outings, Maholm’s ERA has climbed a half-run to 3.66. He has allowed 17 earned runs and 31 hits in 22 2-3 innings.
Former Pitt star Fitzgerald inks dealTEMPE, Ariz. — The Arizona Cardinals and Larry Fitzgerald have agreed to an eight-year deal that could pay the star receiver as much as $120 million, making it one of the richest deals in the NFL.The agreement, with guarantees near $50 million, is by far the biggest in the franchise’s history.The 6-foot-3, 218 pound receiver has become the franchise’s career leader in receptions with 613 and needs just 294 yards to surpass Roy Green for career yards receiving. In Arizona’s surprise run to the Super Bowl in the 2008 season, Fitzgerald shattered most of the NFL playoff receiving records.
Angels, Weaver agree on contractANAHEIM, Calif. — The Los Angeles Angels have scheduled a news conference for Tuesday, when the team is expected to announce it has agreed with pitcher Jered Weaver on a five-year contract.SI.com first reported that Weaver and the Angels have agreed to a deal worth $85 million.The 28-year-old Weaver leads the American League with a 2.10 ERA and is 14-6 this season. He started the All-Star game for the AL.Weaver was on target to become a free agent after the 2012 season.
Pryor works out for NFL teamsGREENSBURG — Terrelle Pryor worked out for 17 NFL teams Saturday and said afterward he wouldn’t appeal his five-week suspension at the start of the NFL season.With the former Ohio State quarterback trying to prove he should be taken in Monday’s supplemental draft, spectators included Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin and director of football operations Kevin Colbert.
