CRANBERRY TWP — The Cranberry Township Federation 14 Pony baseball team recently won the East Zone/West Region title in Westmoreland County by sweeping its three opponents.

The team, which is coached by Ron Bondo, will begin play in the Pony World Series Saturday in Washington, Pa.

St. Jude foursome ties for 5th placeWEIRTON, W.Va. — Dennis Dolci of St. Jude Golf Club team with amateurs David Trainor, James Gentile and James Beck tied for fifth place at the Club Prophet Systems Pro-3 Amateur Monday at Williams Country Club.The foursome carded a 130, seven strokes behind PGA Professional Derek Mousseau and amatuers Steve Garrison, Patrick Brady and Jonathan Thomas.Dolci also won the low professional event with a 66 while Jody Barrett of Cranberry Highlands tied for fourth place with a 72. Barrett captured the skins contest at No. 14, as well.

London riots stop soccer gameLONDON — Raging riots across London forced England to call off Wednesday’s soccer match against the Netherlands at Wembley Stadium.The Football Association made the decision Tuesday morning after talks with the British government and the Metropolitan Police, who had struggled to contain a third night of unrest in the British capital.“Good call,” England defender Rio Ferdinand said on Twitter. “Who wants to see a game of football when our country is in turmoil.”Club England managing director Adrian Bevington condemned the “deplorable scenes of disorder.”

2 triathletes die at NYC competitionNEW YORK — Two competitors died after experiencing problems during the swim portion of the Nautica New York City Triathlon, leading race organizers to consider demanding more documentation of athletes’ training and experience.The deaths were the second and third ones at the popular triathlon in the last three years.On Monday, a New York City lawmaker called for a top-to-bottom review, questioning whether rain the night before — which could have led to choppy water and strong currents — or 90-degree temperatures were factors.
