Back on track

Butler Blue Sox catcher #28 Taylor Juran puts the tag on Chillicothe Paints #9 Steve Anderson for an out at the plate in the 5th inning.

With a stretch of four home games in a row, the Butler BlueSox are hoping to get a little more comfortable in their own surroundings.

After Monday, the squad was feeling a little better about themselves.

The BlueSox plated the tying run in the sixth inning, then used an RBI single by Jon Danielczyk and an RBI double by Colin Harrington in the seventh inning to come away with a 5-3 Prospect League victory over the Chillicothe Paints at Pullman Park.

Butler (4-6 second half) had lost a 1-0 decision at Chillicothe Saturday, then dropped a 4-1 decision at home against Terre Haute, struggling to get the offense going.

On Monday, the BlueSox mustered just one hit through the first four innings but trailed by only a 3-2 margin.

"We finished with five runs and we could have had a couple more," said Butler manager Anthony Rebyanski. "We battled. We've had a rough stretch.

"They're upbeat. We talked to the guys about momentum and having fun and getting back to the basics in the pregame warmups," Rebyanski added.

"It is tough on the road, especially in the Prospect League," said Harrington, a shortstop who plays at the University of Virginia.

"You go on five-, six-, seven-hour drives through West Virginia, Ohio. It's nice to be able to come home and play here," Harrington added.

It was Harrington who led off the sixth inning with a double and scored two outs later when Jason Radwan lined a single to tie the game at 3.

In the seventh, the BlueSox took the lead when Chris Rasky walked, stole second, moved to third on a fielder's choice when he beat the throw and scored on Danielczyk's hit.

Two batters later, Harrington launched a double for the two-run lead. Butler had runners at second and third but a fielder's choice at home, then a pickoff at first base short-circuited the inning.

Still, the BlueSox made it hold up. Javier Diaz pitched the eighth inning, surrendering a pair of one-out walks, but escaped and Brian Thompson retired the side to pick up the save.

Brad Duffy was the beneficiary of those two seventh-inning runs to pick up the win. He struck out five and walked one, scattering 11 hits in his seven innings.

He allowed at least one hit in each inning, but prevented the Paints (6-5) from posting a big inning.

"I tell the kids, 'You'll fail a lot,'" Rebyanski said. "You can't worry about what happens. (Duffy's) sort of the ace of the staff. You have to be headstrong. You can't let a single thing bother you."

"Damage control, that's how he pitched," said Harrington. "He gave up 11 hits but only three runs. He battled his butt off."

The Paints got to Duffy for two runs in the third inning when Drew Dosch had an RBI double, then moved to third on a throwing error. He scored on a fielder's choice.

Butler tied the game in the bottom of the third when Stephen Vranka's two-out sinking liner was dropped in center field, then a delayed steal plated the second run.

The Paints took their final lead of the night in the fourth when Ian Nielsen had an RBI single.

Butler will host Chillicothe again today before West Virginia comes to town on Wednesday.

"Life on the road is different," said Rebyanski. "At home, you sleep in your own bed. You still have to come to the ballpark, though"

Notes: Harrington came up big in the field as well, taking a throw from left fielder Rasky at the wall on a double by Paul Snieder, then gunning a perfect throw to catcher Taylor Juran, who tagged out Steve Anderson for the final out of the fifth inning. ... The Paints stranded seven runners on the base paths while Butler left five.
