Derby Winners
Hundreds of soap box derby enthusiasts lined High Street in Freeport to watch young drivers pilot their home built racing machines down a block long course on July 1, 1976. Cars were placed in two categories and winners were selected through numerous elimination races. Kurt Buday, left, drove a metal framed car and captured top honors in class A. In class B, the winner was Mike Petras, center, who drove a car built by Louie Powell. Second place in class B went to Tom Sweeny.
