BC3's Baroffio 1 stroke short of All-American
JAMESTOWN, N.Y. — Antonio Baroffio finished strong, but a stroke short.
The Butler graduate and Butler County Community College sophomore carded a 22-over-par 310 in the four-day NJCAA Division III National Golf Tournament last week at Chautauqua Golf Club in New York.
The top 15 placers in the 90-golfer event earned All-American honors. Baroffio finished 16th overall, one stroke away.
“He was a little disappointed, but when he looks back on this ... Antonio had quite a career for us,” BC3 golf coach Bill Miller said.
Baroffio was a two-time all-conference and all-state golfer for the Pioneers. He became the first BC3 golfer to win the Region XX Tournament last month.
“My goal was to make All-American,” Baroffio said. “To come within a shot like that ... I can think of 100 shots during that tournament that I could have made that up on.”
Baroffio’s final round of the 72-hole national tournament was an even-par 72.
“That was an outstanding round and he had the best score of the 10 Region XX golfers in the field,” Miller said.
It also pushed him ahead 12 spots in the final standings. Baroffio began that final round in 28th place.
“My coach and I knew it was gonna be close,” Baroffio said of the All-American bid.
Baroffio shot an 81 on the first day of the event, followed by a 75, 82 and 70.
He was scheduled to tee off at 9 a.m. for Round 2, but rains delayed his start time until 11 a.m.
“That actually helped because the rain softened the greens and made them hold a little better,” Baroffio said.
Alex McKee of Monroe County Community College — a Rochester (NY) school that won the team competition — was medalist for the tourney with a 9-over-par 297.
Majoring in computer information systems, Baroffio has another semester remaining at BC3. He plans on returning to the college in the fall to complete that course of study, then transfer to Indiana (Pa.) University.
Baroffio will major in computer science at IUP.
