<B>Meadowcroft Rockshelter</B> and Historic Village, 401 Meadowcroft Road in Avella, Washington County, hosts the annual atlatl competition, a spear-throwing contest, from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Prehistoric hunters, like the ones who camped at Meadowcroft Rockshelter 16,000 years ago, used the atlatl to launch a spear with tremendous force, enabling them to hunt prey from relatively safe distances.
