BlueSox get best of Sliders

Shayne Houck may not be with the Butler BlueSox much longer.

If he isn’t, he’ll be leaving with a moment to remember.

Houck’s two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning Saturday night was the winning hit in Butler’s 5-4 come-from-behind victory over the Slippery Rock Sliders at Pullman Park.

The game marked the first of 11 times the Butler County rivals will play each other this season. They met again Sunday night at Critchfield Park, with the BlueSox winning 10-7. Jason Radwan went 3-for-4 for Butler with two runs and a RBI and West Virginia University product Chris Rasky — who joined the team only two days ago — went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.

Matt Lengel picked up the win in Sunday’s game, striking out five and walking just one in seven innings. He gave up just one run on five hits.

Houck, though, was the hero Saturday.

Houck was the PSAC East Player of the Year with Kutztown University this spring. The third baseman-outfielder is expected to be selected by a major league organization during this week’s amateur draft.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen there,” Houck said. “It’s out of my control, so I try not to think about it.

“I’d love to play here all summer. These fans are awesome. This atmosphere was like a college playoff game. But if the right opportunity comes, I have to do what’s best for me.”

He was thinking plenty about his eighth-inning at-bat Saturday.

With the bases loaded and two outs, Houck fell behind in the count, 1-2.

“He (Sliders pitcher Chase Byerly) threw me three straight fastballs and I knew he had a good slider, too,” Houck said.

“I anticipated I was gonna get a slider at some point. I guessed right on the next pitch and he left it up in the zone.”

Houck delivered a soft liner into right-center field, turning a 4-3 deficit into an eventual 5-4 win, the first victory for the BlueSox at home this year.

It was the first loss — albeit a frustrating one — for the Sliders after two wins to start the season.

“You can’t give extra outs to good teams. We got burned that way tonight,” Sliders manager Andy Chalot said.

The Sliders committed three errors in the final two innings, including a costly gaffe in the eighth.

Slippery Rock built a 3-0 lead in the first five and a half innings with starting pitcher Scott Dierdorf, a Penn State-Greater Allegheny product, working on a no-hitter.

Dierdorf faced the minimum 15 batters through five innings. He hit Rasky with a pitch with one out in the second, but got Evan Oswald to ground into a double play.

Michael Durham — who produced six hits in two games for the Sliders — reached on an infield single, stole second and scored on a wild pitch in the Sliders’ second inning. RBI singles by Jon Capasso and Durham in the sixth staked Dierdorf to the 3-0 lead.

But that all changed.

Freeport graduate Ryan Siegel ended the no-hit bid with a looping double down the right field line to begin the BlueSox sixth. He scored on a Jon Danielczyk ground ball.

Houck doubled with one out in the seventh and Tenple University first baseman Tyler Juran homered to right to tie the game.

“Sometimes an offense just needs a jolt, something to spark it,” BlueSox manager Anthony Rebyanski said. “I know we have good hitters on this team.

“That homer seemed to get us going.”

Juran hit .319 for Temple this spring, but homered only once in 91 at-bats for the Owls.

“Scott pitched a helluva game for us,” Chalot said. “He only made one mistake. He left that fastball up and in the middle of the plate.”

The Sliders loaded the bases with one out in the eighth and Rebyanski called upon closer Brian Thompson at that point. Thompson walked Radley Haddad on four pitches to force in the go-ahead run.

The Sliders failed to add on, however, as pinch-hitter Mitch Elliott popped to the catcher and Mason Dillon flew out to center.

“That was big. We could have put it away there,” Chalot said. “Instead, we opened the door.”

“I don’t like to bring a new pitcher in with the bases loaded,” Rebyanski said. “But in this case, I wanted my best pitcher out there. Brian’s our closer and we needed him.”

The BlueSox had a runner at first with two outs in the bottom of the eighth when Stephen Vranka apparently struck out to end the inning. The pitch was blocked by catcher Keith Burgi and the ball popped straight up in the air.

As Vranka ran toward first base, Burgi had plenty of time to throw him out. But his high throw pulled the first baseman off the bag and extended the inning. Matt Berezo then walked on a 3-2 pitch to set up Houck’s heroics.

Thompson got the save in the ninth.

“This win showed a lot of heart,” Rebyanski said. “The way we won it was nice to see.”
