Smith, Falcons win big
EMLENTON — Cole Smith never allowed the Cameron County offense to get going.
On the other side, he was the catalyst that kept his A-C Valley teammates going.
Smith allowed the Red Raiders just two hits and smacked a pair of doubles and drove in two runs as the Falcons prevailed 12-0 in five innings in this first-round District 9 Class A baseball playoff contest Tuesday.
“Cole kept them off-balanced. That's Cole Smith,” said Falcons coach John Irwin. “That's what he's done all year. He didn't overpower them.”
Smith allowed a leadoff single to Vince Summers and one to Joe Holjencin in the third inning.
Holjencin was the only runner to reach second base. He stole second with one out before Smith struck out Summers and Jake Brown flied out.
“We really didn't know much about him,” said Cameron County coach Ryan Bresslin about Smith. “He kept us off-balanced.”
The Falcons (13-3) erupted for five first-inning runs and took advantage of two Raiders errors.
Smith reached on an error to open the home half of the first inning, then one out later Allan Eaton doubled.
A grounder by Blayne McGuirk plated Smith, but a wild throw to first base allowed Eaton to score.
Eric Staab followed with an RBI single, then Cole Terwilliger doubled before Brody Irwin slapped a two-run single to cap the frame.
“(Errors) seemed to kill us all year,” said Bresslin. “In the first inning we seem to get jitters and get a couple of errors ... and they've got some good hitters.”
Eaton added an RBI single in the second for a 6-0 lead which stood until a six-run fourth inning allowed the Falcons to pull away.
Eaton started it off with a solo home run while Irwin and Jay Mangel added consecutive two-run doubles.
“Everyone contributed through the order, No. 1 through 9,” said Irwin.
Next up, A-C Valley will travel to face No. 3 seed Clarion at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. The Bobcats (14-2) had received a first-round bye.
