BASF holds a Kids' Lab

ZELIENOPLE — BASF employees from the plant in Evans City provided hands-on demonstrations to 22 students in Lisa Karasack’s 4th grade class at Saint Gregory’s School on April 20.

During each Kids’ Lab program, BASF employees lead participants through fun, hands-on chemistry experiments. St. Gregory’s students participated in three science experiments: cleaning waste water using filtration and activated charcoal, making slime and learning how chemical bonds are formed.

In addition to learning the important role that chemistry plays in everyday life, each participant receives a BASF lab apron, prize pack and certificate, the BASF news release said.

BASF’s Kids’ Lab program fosters science literacy by encouraging children, ages 6 to 12, to gain a better appreciation and interest for the dynamic world of chemistry.

The program is designed to provide a hands-on learning for children, teachers and caregivers. Children learn how chemistry is all around us and how BASF creates chemistry.

The Kids’ Lab program is offered to schools in communities where BASF has operations.

Fisher Scientific provided $1,000 worth of equipment such as beakers and test tubes.

Karasack said in the release, “The students became actively involved, from wearing lab coats and safety goggles, to working with materials. It really helped them to take interest in formulating scientific thoughts and ideas.”
