Jeney tosses no-hitter for Rock
LOCK HAVEN — Pitching keyed the Slippery Rock University baseball team to a 5-0, 3-0 doubleheader sweep at fading Lock Haven Saturday.
Included among the two shutouts was a no-hitter by junior left-hander Zach Jeney. He struck out six and walked four in winning the first game.
Jeney (6-1) tossed The Rock’s second no-hitter of the season. Sophomore Joby Lapkowicz threw one April 3 to Clarion.
Jeney’s no-hitter was the first-ever at Lock Haven’s Foundation Field, the Bald Eagles’ home field since 1993.
Freshman right-handers Lou Trivino and Ryan Oglesby — the latter a North Allegheny graduate — combined on a four-hit shutout in the nightcap.
While SRU (25-13, 13-5) has won 18 of its last 23 games to assume a game and a half lead over Mercyhurst in the PSAC West standings, Lock Haven (16-19, 6-12) has dropped six straight games to league foes.
Senior DH Mitchell Monas had three hits, including a two-run homer and RBI double, in the first game to lead SRU’s attack. Senior center fielder Matt Howard had three hits, including a double in each game.
A four-run sixth inning keyed the first game victory. Derek DiRuscia hit a home run during that game.
Sophomore third baseman Jamison Walck slapped a two-run single to left to snap a scoreless tie in the sixth inning of the second game.
SRU and Lock Haven play a twinbill at 1 p.m. today at Critchfield Park. The Rock has a four-game showdown with Mercyhurst this coming weekend.
