Prom season is approaching. Although beautiful gowns signify the occasion, no outfit is complete without an elegant coiffure. Here, hair stylist Amy Garvey shares insights from her chair at Prima Capelli salon:

QUESTION: How much does business increase on prom days?ANSWER: Most of the time it starts when we open in the morning at 9:30 and it doesn't end til 2:00 that afternoon. ... I've had girls book (as early as) January and February.

QUESTION: Have styles changed over time? If so, how?ANSWER: When I first started doing hair (seven years ago), everybody wanted a tight updo with pinned curls — and everything was formed. Over time it has become more relaxed and more natural looking. This year is probably more soft and flowing. ... A lot of girls are keeping their hair all down, or half up.

QUESTION: What are the latest accessories?ANSWER: A lot of the girls are putting those clip-in extensions in and getting them curled. It's absolutely beautiful. And the big thing is Bling String (sparkly hair extensions). It's kind of like tinsel for hair.

QUESTION: What's your advice for avoiding disappointment due to ideas that backfired?ANSWER: To avoid anything unwanted, I would say definitely schedule a practice run maybe a week or two before the big day. Keep it simple, and keep in mind the style that you're bringing to the hair stylist: Anything too intricate could be very difficult to do. Pictures can be deceiving, but it's always good to bring a picture.

QUESTION: Any advice for keeping a hairdo intact?ANSWER: A lot of the girls know not to come with freshly washed hair, because it doesn't stay in as well as hair that hasn't been washed for a day. We need the hair to be completely dry. And I always advise my girls to put a little mousse or gel in their hair the day before when they wash their hair, just for better hold.
