Revesz on roll for GC
GROVE CITY — Jason Revesz had everything working.
The Grove City pitcher had a fastball with zip, a changeup that had the Slippery Rock batters spinning themselves into the dirt and a curveball that buckled knees.
It all added up to a five-inning no-hitter for the Eagles' right-hander in an 11-0 victory Thursday afternoon.
“He did a marvelous job today,” said Grove City coach Pat Forese of his pitcher. “He's a tough kid when he's on like that. We haven't played a whole lot with the weather, but his curveball was the best it has ever been.”
Revesz struck out eight and allowed only one ball to reach an outfielder — a fly out to right to lead off the second inning.
Meanwhile, the Grove City offensive gave Revesz plenty of support.
Jeff Revesz, Jason's brother, hit two home runs in the first two innings. His shot to left in the bottom of the first inning was a line drive that barely cleared the fence.
His two-run blast in the bottom of the second inning was a more majestic, towering shot.
Jeff Revesz now has six home runs in eight games this season and has 21 homers in his career. That ties him for the Grove City career home run record with his elder brother, Bob, who now is a pitcher in the St. Louis Cardinals organization.
Jon Anderson also homered in the first as Grove City led 6-0 after the first two innings.
The Eagles (7-1, 3-0) blew the game open and forced the mercy rule to kick in after a five-run fourth, highlighted by a grand slam off the bat of Tyler Devine.
Grove City hit three more home runs — two off the bat of leadoff man Alex Miklos — in the second game, an 11-4 win over Commodore Perry.
Anderson picked up the win in that contest.
The Grove City onslaught against Slippery Rock came at the expense of Rocket pitchers Mitch Robinson and Andrew Gieraltowski.
Robinson started the game and worked three innings. Gieraltowski worked the rough fourth frame for the Rockets.
The win also came at the expense of first-year Slippery Rock coach Jim Revesz, who is the father of Jason and Jeff.
“Grove City is a good team, a very good team,” Jim Revesz said. “We aspire to be a team like Grove City.”
Slippery Rock struggled to make solid contact.
Our guys weren't used to that change of speeds,” Jim Revesz said. “(Jason Revesz) threw a curveball in a three-ball count. They're not used to seeing that. He was pretty sharp.”
Miklos showed off his speed against Slippery Rock to go with his power against Commodore Perry.
Two of the three hits off the bat of Miklos were infield singles. He also swiped four bases.
Speed. Pitching. Power. That combination makes Forese smile.
“It's a fun team to coach,” Forese said. “It makes it easy.”
