Raider lacrosse on a roll
JACKSON TWP — Whether Seneca Valley had 10, 11 or 12 players on the field, it didn't matter.
The Raiders' girls lacrosse team was dominant.
Playing shorthanded for the final 10-plus minutes of the second half because of three yellow cards, the Raiders still were able to outplay North Allegheny on the way to an 11-5 win at NexTier Stadium Thursday night.
“They were really good at stalling,” said North Allegheny coach Shannon Hadaway. “With as close as the officials were calling things, there's only so much you can do defensively.”
Seneca Valley (7-0, 5-0) led 9-3 when the yellow cards forced two players off the field.
Despite that, the Raiders still maintained their lead as they were adept at keeping possession and keeping North Allegheny from getting back into the game.
“It was nerve-wracking, but I was confident that they were going to be fine,” said Seneca Valley coach Dina Hughes. “They know how to handle situations like that.”
The Raiders also handled a slow start.
North Allegheny jumped out to a 2-0 lead less than five minutes into the game on goals by Carly Luitgaafden and Meredith Gumash.
But after that initial flurry by the Tigers (3-3, 2-3), Seneca Valley seized control.
The Raiders rolled off eight consecutive goals — three coming from the crosse of Sam Struss — and took an 8-3 lead into halftime.
A quick start followed by a massive lull has been the norm for the Tigers this season, Hadaway said.
“We do that. We seem to fall off,” she said. “I think it's an internal issue. Seneca is a great team, but we need to figure some things out on our end.”
Struss finished with three goals and two assists for Seneca Valley.
Paige Corathers also had a solid game for the Raiders with two goals and two assists. Morgan Midkiff also had two goals and Audrey Semel, Taylor Mayeda, Brenna Gallagher and Natalie Roche also found the net.
Seneca Valley showed off its team speed and fundamentals throughout the contest.
“Seneca has some really good players. They've been killin' it,” Hadaway said. “They pass and catch well and those are the fundamentals of lacrosse. If you can do those things in Western Pennsylvania, you are going to win.
“And, they are very fast,” Hadaway added. “Their coach said ‘you are really fast.' I said, ‘What do you mean we're fast? You're faster.'”
After going 17-5 and reaching the state playoffs last season, the Raiders are off to a flawless start this year.
“We're very excited. We're looking forward to the rest of the season,” Hughes said. “(Coming into the season) I thought we were going to be successful, but our section is really competitive, so you really don't know sometimes. The girls really put in a lot of hard work at practice and it pays off.”
