County's reps differ on federal budget

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congress is set to vote today on a spending plan that will fund day-to-day operations for the federal government through September, but not every local member of Congress is happy with President Barack Obama’s plan.

Legislators who represent the county offered differing perspectives on the president’s plan.

Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., said that while he’s pleased Obama has addressed the need to reduce the nation’s skyrocketing debt and to cut spending, the country needs “more than rhetoric” to help get its fiscal house in order.

Toomey also railed against Obama’s call to implement a tax increase on wealthier Americans while simultaneously ending Bush-era tax cuts.

“President Obama still seems to think that the source of prosperity in America is more government,” Toomey said. “The spending cuts he proposes are insufficient, and the tax increases he embraces are counterproductive to the country’s economic recovery and growth.

Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., took a different approach, and said tax reform needs to be a crucial element of any budget plans for the present and beyond.

Casey also cautioned, however, that eliminating the nation’s Medicare program “is not the right answer” and that such a move would have a profound economic impact on middle-class Americans and senior citizens.

“Smart cuts and tax reform are required so we can keep Pennsylvania’s economy growing and create jobs,” Casey said. “Pennsylvania working families, children and older citizens who have been hit hard by the recession should not bear the brunt of these cuts.”

Rep. Jason Altmire, D-4th, echoed Casey’s sentiments and said the nation’s tax code is in need of reformation. More importantly, Altmire said, is the need for “immediate and concrete action” to balance the nation’s budget, the first step in creating a longer-term plan to put the country back on the “path to prosperity.”

Rep. Mike Kelly, R-3rd, couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
