SB students capture awards

Students in the South Butler School District have won awards at competitions in Pittsburgh and Hershey.

Knoch Science Club students took first, second and third places in the senior biology division, beating out 53 entrants in the 72nd Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair. Five other students won university scholarships.

The first place winner is Kelly Doyle, who won $300 for her study, “Ocean Acidification.” Her poster is on display at the Carnegie Science Center, Pittsburgh.

The second place winner is Ashley Hughes, who won $175 for her study, “Urchin for Answers.”

The third place winner is Jessica Smithson, who won $75 for her study, “Allelopathy in Aquatic Systems.”

University scholarship winners are:

• Kristie Daubner, who won a $20,000 Point Park University scholarship for her study, “Little Buffalo Creek Testing”

• Lauren Freimuth, who won an $8,000 Gannon University scholarship for her study, “Is Shampoo Giving You Acne”

• Andrew Tuzikow, who won an $8,000 Waynesburg University scholarship for his study, “Alcohol: Too Much or Too Little”

• Desiree Goldstrohm, who won a $4,000 St. Francis University scholarship for her study, “P & N Limiting Factors”

• Maranda Tano, who won a $4,000 St. Francis University scholarship for her study, “Logging Affecting the Ecosystem”

In Hershey, Knoch Middle School students were recognized by the state Future Business Leaders of America-Middle Level.

The following students participated in a regional competition and scored higher than their competitors statewide. First place winners are Molly Conlon, Alice Gordon, Hallie Lauer and Ben Thoma.
