Butler Catholic excels at First in Math

Students at Butler Catholic School are ranked third in the nation among more than a million students playing First in Math online. They are ranked second in Pennsylvania.

“To be a top school you have to have multiple teams all pulling their weight,” said Nan Ronis, executive vice president of Suntex International. “On average, that’s 10,428 math problems per child to reach this level of competition.”

More than 170 students at Butler Catholic are honing their math skills using FIM. Suntex owns FIM.

The Butler Catholic students are broken into eight teams, ranging from first through eighth grades. The eighth grade team, Team Glory 58 PA, is in the top 10 nationally, and is first among eighth grades since September. The team works on pre-algebra and algebra problems.

“FIM has a very broad range of math problems, from one-step addition to complex algebra problems,” Ronis said. “We are really a practice opportunity.”
