SR school events keep activities director busy

HARRISVILLE — Over the past 19 years, Pam Raisley has had a hand in just about every activity in the Slippery Rock School District.

A resident of Harrisville, Raisley is the activities secretary at the high school.

“I've worked with different clubs like the prom committee, stage crew for the talent show, musicals and concerts ... I even filled in as cheerleading coach a few times and that was fun.

“I was a cheerleader all through high school,” she added. “The mounts they use today are a lot different, though. Back when I cheered, it was all very basic.

She added, “I like my job because it deals with a variety of different things.”

Raisley's duties also entail much involvement with the district's athletic teams.

She has worked with six athletic directors at the high school, including the current AD, Jake Jefferis.

“I help conduct sports sign-ups at both the high and middle school,” Raisley said. “When the district's been in-between athletic directors, a lot of that responsibility has fallen on my shoulders.

“A couple of years ago, I even went to an athletic directors' meeting in Titusville,” she added. “You do what you have to so things keep running smoothly.”

But days that seem to be running smoothly can become hectic in a hurry.

“If we get bad weather in the middle of the day, a lot of parents will call up asking if a game or event is still on for that evening. I schedule the busing for the sports teams, so that can be affected by bad weather.

“The athletic director takes care of most of the game scheduling,” she said. “Every once in a while, if for instance we have a track meet scheduled the same day as the prom, we might have to switch things around with another school.”

The school district has been a major part of Raisley's life.

Her first few years were spent in Grove City, but her family moved to Harrisville when she was 6 years old.

Raisley attended Harrisville Elementary and Slippery Rock Junior/Senior High School, graduating in 1975.

“Along with cheering, I also kept stats for the track and field team. They started the girls basketball team my junior year, but there are a lot more opportunities for high school girls now than when I was in school.”

She met her future husband, Charles “Chuck” Raisley, while in high school.

“He is from Portersville. We were both involved in the choir with one of the musical productions at the school,” she said. “We started dating and he graduated in 1974. We married soon after I graduated the following year.”

While raising their three children, Chuck and Pam lived in several towns, including Zelienople, Portersville and Prospect. They settled in Harrisville in 1983, just three houses down from where Pam grew up.

The Raisleys' three children, Larry, Tracy and Andrew, all graduated from Slippery Rock High.

“Andrew lives in Cranberry Township, Larry and Tracy both live in Colorado, outside of Denver,” Pam said. “Tracy has a baby girl, my granddaughter, Alena. She's 10 months old.

“We've been out there to visit a few times,” she added. “The Rocky Mountains are beautiful, a little different from the mountains we have here in Pennsylvania.”

Raisley spends her free time reading, singing in the choir at Grove City Alliance Church and exercising.

At home, she enjoys getting outside.

“A friend of mine and I like to walk,” she said. “We can't get out every day, especially (in the winter), but when we do, we like to get three miles in.”

Pam and her husband also like to camp.

“We like Clear Creek (State Park) up near Clarion, and we've also been to Cook Forest,” Pam said. “It's just so relaxing to get away from all the phones. We go every chance we get.”

But Raisley has no problem returning to her little nook of Butler County.

“Harrisville is a nice little town,” she said. “I like the country atmosphere.”
