New Raiders coach will depend on youngsters

Junior Cody Bachman and the rest of the Butler boys lacrosse team are aiming for another WPIAL title this season.

JACKSON TWP — There aren't many familiar faces mulling about before a Tuesday evening practice.

The Seneca Valley boys lacrosse team lost 14 seniors to graduation after a 2010 campaign that saw the Raiders win 20 games and reach the PIAA Division I semifinals.

Gone is WPIAL Division I Player of the Year Jake McAndrew and his 50 goals and 40 assists. Gone, too, is Brian Bohn, a brick wall of a goalie, and 12 others who made an impact on the program.

But that doesn't mean SV is going to wilt this spring under first-year coach Peet Poillon.

After all, Poillon wore a Raiders lacrosse uniform in the program's infancy a decade ago.

“These kids are going to dictate where we can take it,” Poillon said. “They are certainly capable of winning the WPIAL championship, if they all buy in and create that team atmosphere we are looking for.”

The team is young, but loaded with talent.

“We have a good group,” Poillon said. “They are all working hard, and that is the key.”

Boys Seneca ValleyCoach: Peet Poillon, first year

Last year: 20-3, PIAA Division I semifinalist

On the attack: Will Koontz (senior), Mike Russell (senior)

On the defensive: Jordon Kelly (sophomore), Andy Hickman (sophomore)

In goal: Jake Succop (junior), Jordan Culichia (sophomore)

Outlook: Poillon pulls no punches when he speaks of where he wants the program to go.“I plan on being here for a while,” Poillon said. “I definitely plan on building something strong. I want to bring a state championship here.”

ButlerCoach: Brandon Hoskinson, first year

Last year: 18-2, WPIAL Division II champion

On the attack: Cody Bachman (junior), Jake Whann (junior)

On the defensive: Jordan Lumley (senior), Dom Farmer (senior)

In goal: Josh Jablonski (freshman), Erik Peters (senior)

Outlook: The Golden Tornado are coming off their first WPIAL title. While Butler lost some talent from that team, including Nathan Barthlow to a season-ending knee injury, there still is plenty to be tapped.“We don't have a superstar individual here,” Hoskinson said. “We're focusing on playing a team-oriented game and it's amazing to see them adapt to that.”

Girls Seneca ValleyCoach: Dina Hughes, fourth year

Last year: 17-5, WPIAL Division I runner-up

On the attack: Sam Struss (senior), Taylor Mayeda (senior), Morgan Midkiff (junior), Paige Corathers (senior)

On the defensive: Brenna Gallagher (senior), Marla Shipton (senior), Misha Demchuk (sophomore)

In goal: Lauren Moran (senior)

Outlook: The Raiders have much of the core returning from a team that reached the WPIAL Division I final and the state playoffs last season. Struss, who has committed to Division I Liberty (Va.) University, scored nearly 90 goals a season ago.“We have many returning varsity players this season, and a team that works well together on the field,” Hughes said. “Last year we played in the WPIAL championship and made it to the PIAA tournament, so we had a very successful season. This season we hope to make the playoffs and be successful in (all) aspects of the game.”

ButlerCoach: Annie Succop, fifth year

Last year: 9-7

On the attack: Brittney Miller (senior), Alyssa Olenick (senior)

On the defensive: Allie Houk (senior), Cameron Horwat (senior), Callie Johns (senior), Lauren Kiggens (senior)

In goal: Cara Moses (senior)

Outlook: The Butler defense should be one of the best tin the league, thanks to a quartet of senior stoppers led by Houk.Houk, a four-year starter, has committed to Liberty University.“I'm really excited, especially with all the defensive players we have coming back,” Succop said.

KnochCoach: Garett Butler, fourth year

Last year: 2-15

On the attack: Lauren Crist (senior)

On the defensive: Jenna Morrow (senior), Janet Rieck (senior), Desiree Goldstrohm (junior)

Outlook: The Knights have three experienced seniors, but the program still is in a rebuilding phase. The defense should be stout, but scoring could be a tricky proposition. Most of the roster, in fact, had never played the game until the first day of practice.Still, Butler was encouraged by what he saw in the team's first scrimmage.“We had six days to whip them into shape and I saw some surprises,” said Butler, who has seen the roster grow to 36 players in 2011. “Hopefully, every year we will pick up a handful more. I enjoy teaching the game.”
