West Penn name returns

First Energy has changed Allegheny Energy’s name back to West Penn Power.

On Friday First Energy and Allegheny Energy finalized the Akron, Ohio-based First Energy’s buyout of the companies known as Allegheny Energy and has since reverted the regional parts of the company back to their original names.

The company provides electricity to a wide area in Butler County.

Doug Colafella, First Energy’s manager of external communications, said Tuesday the company has done some polling and asked focus groups what they remember about West Penn Power.

“We found West Penn Power has good brand recognition as well as a positive place in the community,” he said.

“One First Energy goal is to refocus regionally with goodwill and community contributions,” Colafella added.

He said the company will remain as it is currently structured at this time with the Greensburg offices remaining as regional headquarters.

Colafella also said with 10 regional First Energy companies near each other, workers with those companies can assist each other when there is a power outage in an area.

“We’ll be able to call West Penn Power repair people to the scene and if they need help, we can call on other regional companies to help solve the problem quickly and efficiently,” Colafella said.
