Late score takes down Moniteau

Moniteau's Ashley Brehm tries to find a way around Brookville defender Alyssa Byerly Friday in the Warriors' 42-40 loss in the Distrct 9 playoffs.

CLARION — Moniteau gave Lanae Newsome one too many chances.

Brookville's sophomore guard already had scored 19 points by the time she got her hands on the ball in the final seconds of Friday night's District 9 Class AA girls basketball semifinal.

Newsome faked a shot from the outside, then drove to the hoop, laying in the deciding basket in a 42-40 win over the Warriors at Clarion High.

“We had a good scouting report on Brookville,” said Moniteau coach Mark Yeager. “We knew they are a fast team and that they like to drive to the basket. We just did not get enough stops on defense tonight.”

Newsome led Brookville (17-6) with 11.3 points per game during the regular season. No other player scored more than eight points for the Raiders Friday night.

Brookville coach Mark Powell called a timeout with 14 seconds left to set up the final play.

“You could see it in Lanae's eyes she wanted the ball,” said Powell. “I told the girls after the game that they executed that play to perfection. From the pass that Emily (Ferraro) made to Lanae to the screen that was set — all five girls on the floor made it happen.”

The Warriors (11-11) trailed 34-28 with 5:30 left in the game.

But a 10-3 run, capped by Heather Porter's basket with 2:40 left, handed Moniteau a 38-37 advantage.

Newsome drained a 3-pointer for the Raiders, but Porter answered with another basket to tie the game at 40-all with 1:08 left.

The teams then exchanged turnovers, giving Brookville the final possession.

Moniteau scored more points in the third quarter (15) than it managed in the first half (13).

The Warriors forced Brookville into 27 turnovers.

“We got sloppy at times,” said Powell. “We hung on tonight, but Moniteau played a heck of a game.”

“Brookville's press didn't hurt us one bit,” offered Yeager. “Whether they played a 2-2-1 or a 1-2-2, our girls knew where to be and where to go with the ball.

“I just told the girls at halftime that we needed to be more intense and I thought we were in the second half.”

Katie Brehm led the Warriors with 12 points while Porter added 11 and Amanda Sloan had 10.

“I told the girls I want them to remember this,” said Yeager. “In the offseason, when they think about missing a workout, I want them to remember this game.”
