Man faces trial on charges he stole TV, forged checks

Thefts occurred at parents' home

CHICORA — A man faces possible trial on charges he stole 10 business checks and a flat-screen television from his parents’ house on Cemetery Road in Venango Township.

Jonathan L. Buchanan, 24, earlier this year allegedly forged the checks for cash and to buy items worth more than $1,300, state police said.

He is accused of taking the 42-inch TV and a speaker system valued at a combined $1,700 in 2008, according to court documents.

Buchanan in both cases that police filed this month waived his preliminary hearings Tuesday at the office of District Judge Lewis Stoughton in Chicora.

He is charged with 10 felony counts of forgery and 11 counts of misdemeanor theft, and remains in the Butler County Prison on $16,000 bail.

Police said Buchanan, listed in court papers as having the same address as his parents, between Jan. 14 and Feb. 3 took the checks belonging to his father, Richard Buchanan, and forged them.

He allegedly passed them at five stores in Butler County for assorted items and for cash totaling $1,369.

Surveillance video at some of the stores showed the suspect cashing the checks and buying merchandise, according to documents.

Meanwhile, police charged Buchanan with taking his parents’ TV after he allegedly admitted the theft during an interview last week.

He claimed the television was stolen as part of a deal to satisfy a drug debt, documents said.

Buchanan on April 4 will be formally arraigned in Butler County Court on charges in both cases.
