His bucket list not just wishful thinking

I always found it morbid to make a bucket list.

I never understood the need to write down the stuff you wanted to do before, well, you kicked the bucket.

But my outlook has changed. Perhaps it is because I am barreling down the straightaway toward the age of 40 faster than Trevor Bayne that has tweaked my thinking on that subject.

I’ve done some of the typical bucket list stuff — I’ve seen the Grand Canyon, I’ve gone skydiving, I married the love of my life.

As far as sports-oriented goals go, I have reached some and fallen woefully short of others.

Here is a list of things that should be on any sports enthusiast’s bucket list:

•

Record a hole-in-one.Anyone who has ever picked up a golf club knows this is one of the greatest achievements you can get.I’m still trying.•

Bowl a 300 game. This is the ultimate in individual achievements. You can luck into a hole-in-one in golf. But bowling a 300 game? You can’t luck into that.•

See a baseball game at Fenway Park and Wrigley Field. These are two of the most hallowed baseball parks of all time.I’ve been lucky enough to scratch this one off my list, even though my seat at Fenway was behind a support beam — all I could see was home plate and the Green Monster. That still was good enough for me.•

Run a marathon.Personally, I run only when I am being chased, and I can’t image running that far for that long.Still, it’s an incredible athletic achievement. Maybe I’ll jog — or briskly stroll — one someday.•

Catch a baseball in the stands of a major-league baseball game. This isn’t as easy as it looks.First, you must be in prime foul-ball-catching or home-run-snagging seats.Second, you must be strong enough to fend off the hoards of overzealous fans who also are trying to snare the ball. It’s like tossing Justin Bieber into a pack of teenage girls. It can get nasty in those scrums.•

Run with the bulls in Pamplona.Or go to Walmart on Black Friday. Same thing.•

Step into the batters box against a major-league pitcher. When I was in high school, there was a batting cage near my home that had a special cage called “The Ryan Express.” It was said to simulate a Nolan Ryan fastball and it wasn’t for the faint of heart. They weren’t kidding. I plopped about five bucks worth of quarters into that machine and didn’t make solid contact once. The cage has long since closed — I think it’s a Bruster’s now.I’d like to try again, so, um, Matt Clement, if you are reading this ...Mike Kilroy is a staff writer for the Butler Eagle.
