Event has 29 vying to win
Pageants to determine who will compete in the 2011 Miss Pennsylvania and Miss Pennsylvania Outstanding Teen pageants are set for 7 p.m. Feb. 26 at Butler County Community College's Succop Theater.
The local event will feature 29 young women. Of those, five are vying for the title of Miss Butler County/America, nine are vying to become either Miss Moraine State/America or Miss Mercer County/America; six are competing to become Miss Butler County Outstanding Teen/America and nine are vying to be named Miss Moraine State Outstanding Teen/America or Miss Mercer County Outstanding Teen/America. Six crowns will be awarded.
Contestants will be judged on interviews, talent, onstage questions and evening wear. The Miss Outstanding Teen contestants will model fitness clothing. Miss Pennsylvania contestants will model swimsuits.
Pageant directors are Judy Hughes and Lucy Mudrick.
Emcees will be Victoria Mysliwiec, 2010 Miss Butler County/America; Kristina Miller, 2010 Miss Moraine State/America; Elyse Healey, 2010 Miss Mercer County/America; Shannon McCarren, 2010 Miss Butler County Outstanding Teen/America; and Kaitlynne Kline, 2010 Miss Moraine State Outstanding Teen/America.Appearing as special guest emcees will be Courtney Thomas, 2010 Miss Pennsylvania/America and Jocelyn Gruver, 2010 Miss Pennsylvania Outstanding Teen/America.Special performances will be given by Courtney Bearer, this year's Little Miss Butler County/America and Lauren Russo, Junior Miss Butler County/America.Winners will receive scholarship awards and will advance to their respective pageants at the Syria Mosque in Pittsburgh. Winners of those pageants will advance to the national level.Contestants include:
<B>Jenna DePizzo</B>, 18, of Slippery Rock is the daughter of Rocky and Laura DePizzo. She is a freshman at Slippery Rock University, where she is majoring in elementary and special education. She will sing “On My Own.” Her platform is Inclusion in America: Our Duty to the Future.<B>Hillary Marshall</B>, 19, of Boyers is the daughter of Frank and Sharon Marshall. She is a freshman at Niagara University, majoring in criminal justice and minoring in military science and sociology. She will do the musical theater performance “So Much Better.” Her platform is Support the Troops: Educate the Children.<B>Alyssa Messett</B>, 20, is the daughter of Timothy and Amity Messett. She attends Slippery Rock University, majoring in business marketing. She will sing “Wild Horses.” Her platform is Raising Awareness of Elderly Abuse and Neglect.<B>Amanda Pope</B>, 22, of Slippery Rock is the daughter of Daniel Pope and Denice Leshnock. She is a senior at Slippery Rock University, where she is majoring in elementary education and minoring in dance. She will do a jazz dance to “Fame.” her platform is Put down the Phone and Drive.<B>Kelly Thayer</B>, 18, of Slippery Rock is the daughter of Gary and Robin Thayer. She is a freshman at Slippery Rock University, where she studies math. She will do a jazz dance to “Rhythm of the Night.” Her platform is The American Cancer Society Relay for Life.
<B>Kaitlyn Bontrager</B>, 18, of Meadville is the daughter of Kim and the late Darvin Bontrager. She attends Meadville High School. She will do a jazz dance to “Work.” Her platform is Holding on to Life, Letting Go of Addiction.<B>Elyse Carr</B>, 22, of Pittsburgh is the daughter of Alain and Kim Carr. She is a senior at Carnegie Mellon University, where she studies Chinese language. She will sing “The Prayer.” Her platform is Alzheimer's Patients and their Families.<B>Ashley Duespohl</B>, 22, of Pittsburgh is the daughter of Thomas and Colleen Duespohl. She is a first-year graduate student at Duquesne University, where she majors in health management services and minors in psychology. She will play First Movement Sonata Pathetique on the piano. Her platform is One Miracle at a Time: Building Families Through Adoption.<B>Anne Grill</B>, 19, of Meadville is the daughter of John and Mary Grill. She is a freshman at Pennsylvania State University, majoring in management information systems and minoring in international business. She will sing “Dream a Little Dream of Me.” Her platform is The Call Can Wait.<B>Brittany Marcolini</B>, 21, of Fredericktown is the daughter of Samuel and Leann Marcolini. She is a junior at California (Pa.) University, where she studies psychology. She will do a dance twirl to “Big Time.” Her platform is The Make a Wish Foundation.<B>Maria “Brooke” Miller</B>, 21, of Grove City is the daughter of Ronald and Rita Miller. She is a junior at Grove City College, where she majors in psychology and minors in business. She will sing “I Dreamed a Dream.” Her platform is Helping the Homeless in our Hometown.<B>Kayla Sample</B>, 17, of Grove City is the daughter of Michael and Betsy Sample. She is a senior at Grove City High School. She will do a contemporary dance. Her platform is Crohn's Awareness.<B>Juliann Sheldon</B>, 20, of New Kensington is the daughter of Jeff and Jayce Sheldon. She is a junior at Point Park University, where she majors in advertising and public relations. She will do a jazz dance to “Gonna Live Till I die.” Her platform is Mental Health Awareness.<B>Kristy Weber</B>, 21, of Latrobe is the daughter of Sandra and Eric Kirby. She is a senior at St. Vincent College, where she majors in marketing and minors in biology. She will sing “Feeling Good.” Her platform is Our Hearts, Our Choice: Women's Heart Disease.
<B>Kylie Blum</B>, 15, of Butler is the daughter of Joel and Lisa Blum. She is a sophomore at Butler Intermediate High School. She will dance to “Perfect.” Her platform is Multiple Sclerosis.<B>Olivia Kappler</B>, 15, of Butler is the daughter of Joe and Angela Kappler. She is a freshman at Butler Intermediate High School. She will sing “In My Own Little Corner.” Her platform is Reach Out to Autism.<B>Tiffany Keffalas</B>, 16, of Renfrew is the daughter of Jim and Karen Keffalas. She is a junior at Butler High School. She will sing “O Cessate Di Piagarmi.” Her platform is Anti-bullying.<B>Kayla Keown</B>, 15, of Butler is the daughter of Kathie Pittman and Thomas Keown. She is a sophomore at Butler Intermediate High School. She will dance to “Sometimes.” Her platform is Say “Bull” to Bullying.<B>Jordan Luntz</B>, 13, of Saxonburg is the daughter of Joseph and Rosemarie Luntz. She is a seventh grader at Knoch Middle School. She will sing “Over the Rainbow.” Her platform is Conquering the Odds: A Battle Against Esophageal Cancer.<B>Kyra Nelko</B>, 13, of Cranberry Township is the daughter of Bill and Sandy Nelko. She is in eighth grade at Seneca Valley Middle School. She will do a lyrical ballet to “Ocean Eyes.” Her platform is Celiac's Disease, What is it Really?
<B>Lexie Abplanalp</B>, 15, of Grove City is the daughter of Raymond and Ruth Abplanalp. She is a sophomore at Grove City High School. She will dance. Her platform is Love Replaces Pain: To Write Love on her Arms.<B>Ashlyn DeVore</B>, 16, of Saegertown is the daughter of Amy DeVore and Gary Robinson. She is a sophomore at Saegertown High School. She will do a jazz dance to “Black and Gold.” Her platform is Bullying Hurts: Stand Up and Reach Out.<B>Abagail Johnston</B>, 15, of Grove City is the daughter of Bill and Neva Johnston. She is a sophomore at Grove City High School. She will dance to “Tear Drops on My Guitar.” Her platform is Kindness Over Bullying.<B>Danae Slaugenhaupt</B>, 13, of Summerville is the daughter of Tracy and Darlene Slaugenhaupt. She is in seventh grade at Connections Academy. She will play “Midnight Rhapsody” on the piano. Her platform is Stand Up for Kids.<B>Susie Smithmyer, 17</B>, of Altoona is the daughter of Joseph and Mary Smithmyer. She is a junior at Altoona High School. She will do a baton twirling routine to “You Can't Stop the Beat.” Her platform is Educating the Youth of Today Through the Elders of Yesterday.<B>BreeOnna Springer</B>, 14, of Ligonier is the daughter of Don and Tamra Springer. She is in ninth grade at Valley School of Ligonier. She will do a lyrical dance to “Make it Go Away.” Her Platform is Adopt a Family.<B>Page Weinstein</B>, 13, of Jefferson Hills is the daughter of Jason Weinstein and Lori Benvenuto. She is in eighth grade at Pleasant Hills Middle School. She will do a show twirling routine to “Sparkling Diamonds.” Her platform is Celebrate Our Differences.<B>Julia Wilkins</B>, 16, of Easton is the daughter of Richard and Susan Wilkins. She is a 10th grader at Easton High School. She will sing “Part of Your World.” Her platform is Diabetes Prevention and Awareness.<B>Karlee Zacherl</B>, 15, of Rimersburg is the daughter of Tobias and Marcia Mazzoni. She is a sophomore at Union High School. She will sing “I See You.” Her platform is As Someone With Celiac's Disease.
