Waiting game

Butler, Mars boys won't play until next week

GREEN TREE — It's not March Madness, but how about Frantic February?

Representatives of the 161 teams that qualified for the WPIAL Basketball Championships descended upon the Radisson Hotel Tuesday night to learn their playoff seeding and first-round opponents.

Two Butler County boys teams, Butler and Mars, won't play until next week. The Golden Tornado face Moon next Wednesday while the Planets take on Uniontown Tuesday.

“I guess they took our strength of schedule into consideration,” Butler coach Matt Clement said. “We're seeded ninth and some teams with better records are seeded behind us.

“Having the extra time to prepare is nice, but I was hoping we'd be playing Saturday. Our kids are amped up to get on the court,” he added.

Moon averages 64.1 points per game and is the fourth-place qualifier from Section 4-AAAA.

“I know they're athletic. Other than that, I don't know much about them,” Clement said.

Mars coach Rob Carmody said his team is facing one of the WPIAL's richest traditions in Uniontown.

“They've won something like 44 section titles in their history,” Carmody said. “Our tradition doesn't match theirs, but, fortunately, we don't have to play their tradition. We just have to play this year's team.”

The Planets finished 18-4 overall despite having 10 sophomores and a freshman on their roster.

“Chemistry has been the key for us,” Carmody said. “Our kids play so well together.”

The other four Butler County teams in the WPIAL tournament begin play this weekend.

The Freeport girls face Neshannock Friday night at Hampton while the Mars girls take on Laurel Highlands Saturday at Gateway.

Butler County's lone section champion is Summit Academy, which faces Charleroi Saturday at Gateway.

The section title was the first in any sport in the school's history.

“We stayed together and had a little addition by subtraction,” Summit coach Art McCray said. “What I like about this team is we have no standout scorer. It's really spread around.

“Arley Townsend is our point guard and makes our offense work. But we'll play as many as 14 or 15 kids in a game.”

At 5-17, the Knoch girls have the worst record in the tournament. The Knights take on Hopewell in a pigtail game Saturday at Fox Chapel.

Knoch is one of 29 teams in the tournament with a losing record.

“We're not going to apologize for being here,” said first-year Knights coach Sean O'Donnell. “We got better as the season went on, and that's what we wanted to do.”

The tournament field was put together by a 13-member steering committee, chaired by Deer Lakes athletic director Dan O'Neill.

“The work of that committee is tireless,” said WPIAL executive secretary and former Butler athletic director Tim O'Malley. “To take 161 teams and attempt to come up with fair matchups is extremely challenging.”
