William Anthony “Babe” Hess, 96, of Cabot, formerly of Penn Hills, died Tuesday.

He was the dear husband of the late Margaret (Stets) Hess; father of Greg (Linda) Hess, Rod (Janet) Hess, Margo (Bob) Mongillo and the late Randall H. Hess; grandfather of Kelsie (John) Bernot, Meghan Mongillo, Aubrie Hess-Reedy, Monica (Naveen) Pogula, Emily Mongillo, Kristofer Hess, Elyse Mongillo and Olivia Hess; and great-grandfather of Lacey and Laella Reedy.

He was predeceased by two brothers and a sisters.

After growing up on Lincoln Avenue in Pittsburgh, Bill heeded the call of the Navy to serve in World War II. He was a machinist and first gunner on the LST 925 in the South China Sea.

He used his skills to become a machinist/mechanic providing maintenance for the fire/police of Pittsburgh.

He was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles.

His family enjoyed many summer vacations at Canadohta Lake, Crawford County.

William spent his final years receiving loving care at various Concordia Lutheran Care facilities — Ridgewood, Rebecca House and at the Cabot Concordia Lutheran Ministries, including the Good Samaritan Hospice.

<B>HESS</B> — Friends and relatives of William Anthony “Babe” Hess, who died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2011, will be received Sunday from 1 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the <B>BURKET-TRUBY FUNERAL HOME CREMATION & ALTERNATIVE SERVICES</B>, 421 Allegheny Ave. Oakmont. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the St. Bartholemew Catholic Church, Penn Hills.In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be sent to Concordia Lutheran Ministries, 134 Marwood Road, Cabot, PA 16023.
