STATE

HARRISBURG — Gov. Tom Corbett says the state's dire finances mean that his administration can't extend a low-cost health insurance plan for 42,000 working adults when the program runs out of money in less than three weeks.

Corbett told reporters Thursday that he blames his predecessor, Ed Rendell, for continuing to add people to adultBasic, but not ensuring enough money was in place.

Corbett says he's focused on assembling a budget plan for the fiscal year that begins July 1. He's scheduled to deliver his budget proposal to the Legislature on March 8 and he'll have to address a projected $4 billion-plus deficit.

He did note, however, that some lawmakers are supporting a move to use the Legislature's considerable surplus of taxpayer dollars to extend adultBasic.

HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania Auditor General Jack Wagner is warning that the property value calculations that help determine district-by-district state aid for public school systems are badly flawed.Wagner said Thursday that his office’s review of the 2008 property value data compilation and analysis found widespread flaws. He’s warning that the tiny agency that manages the process should be fixing it with more urgency.Tax equalization board member Dan Guydish didn’t dispute that problems exist. But he says the agency is getting new computer software in June and should then be able to repair any problems in the 2008 and 2009 numbers. In the meantime, he says the board can address problems raised by school districts that are writing their budgets for next year.
