PITTSBURGH — Jury selection is set to begin in the corruption case against state Sen. Jane Orie after higher courts refused to delay the trial.

Orie and one of her sisters are accused of using her taxpayer-funded staff to perform campaign and fundraising work for the lawmaker and a third sister, Supreme Court Justice Joan Orie Melvin. Jury selection is scheduled to begin today in Allegheny County Court.

Prosecutors say Orie's staff performed campaign work since she took office in 2001. The other sister facing trial, Janine Orie, is a Melvin aide who prosecutors say could order the lawmaker's staff to do work on the judge's behalf.

The Ories say they are innocent and the prosecution is politically motivated.

Sen. Orie was elected to her third full term in November.

PHILADELPHIA — Vice President Joe Biden is heading to Philadelphia’s main train station to tout plans to improve the nation’s infrastructure.Biden was scheduled to appear this morning at 30th Street Station with Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.A statement from Biden’s office says he’ll discuss plans for building roads, bridges and high-speed rail.He is also expected to talk about job creation, export markets and initiatives to improve U.S. competitiveness.Biden is known for regularly riding Amtrak from Delaware to Washington during his years as a senator.
