Sophia S. Vayda, 86, of McLean, Va., originally from Butler, passed away peacefully Tuesday surrounded by her family, friends and most loving caregivers at Sunrise Bluemont Park in Arlington, Va.

She was born in Butler, Oct. 9, 1924, a daughter of the late Anthony and Anna Nyziolek Kuzio.

She had been the devoted wife of Peter S. Vayda, to whom she was married from March 4, 1944, until his death on Jan. 27, 2000.

She was the loving mother of Loretta (Lewis) Holt of Falls Church, Va., and grandmother of Lewis Holt III of Manassas, Va.

As the last surviving member of her immediate family, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Marie Olexsak, Kay Wright, Julie Pakutz, Rose Warhola and Dorothy Stecewycz; and a brother, John Kuzio.
