CRANBERRY TWP — Cranberry Township will be one of the “flight path” locations for the Let's Roll Flight 93 Memorial Ride, an organized motorcycle event to raise money for the Flight 93 memorial.

This Sept. 11 marks the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States.

THE CHAMBER of Commerce, in partnership will Quaker Steak & Lube and the SMC Business Counsel of Pittsburgh, are hosting an informational reception to learn how to be a part of the statewide fundraising event.

It will be held at 5 p.m. Feb. 3 at the Quaker Steak & Lube restaurant on Freedom Road.

Susan Balla, executive director, explained she was contacted by the Manufacturers Business Association of Erie about putting together a flight path in Cranberry and was honored to do so.

Each “flight” would consist of 40 riders, who are required to raise at least $1,000 to help fund the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville, Pa.

Each of the riders will carry a flag bearing the name of one of the 40 heroes and on Sept. 11 join hundreds of fellow motorcycle riders from across the state to the memorial dedication and memorial service.

Currently, there are nine groups of 40 bikes, located in eight flight paths including Erie, Meadville/ Conneaut Lake, Pittsburgh, Williamsport, Harrisburg, Cranberry Township, Pottsville and Philadelphia.

All flights will gather in or around Somerset on Sept. 10, 2011, for a pre-ride gathering.

The flights will then ride together in numerical order to the Flight 93 National Memorial site for the Sept. 11 memorial and dedication service.

Those participating will receive an exclusive patch and T-shirt bearing the official “Let's Roll: Flight 93 Memorial Ride” design.

Tammy Polanski, director of marketing for the Manufacturers Business Association of Erie, explained the memorial ride launched because of the annual Roar on the Shore motorcycle fundraising event held in Erie in July.

The organizers pick an organization to donate their funds, and with this year being the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on America, the memorial made a logical choice.

From there, the idea grew and became Let's Roll Flight 93 Memorial Ride where other communities could become involved.

The first flight of 40 riders in Erie filled in only four days after introducing the event to the public, she said. It is already working on its second flight, said Polanski.

Polanski added that they've been contacted by a Harley Motorcycle dealer in Butler that is trying to organize a flight path near Butler.
