Raymond E. Gibb
Raymond E. Gibb, 96, of York passed away Tuesday at Manor Care Health Services-South in York.
He was the husband of the late Edith E. (Martin) Gibb. They were married July 1, 1936, at her home in Grove City and spent 72½ years together.
Mr. Gibb was born May 25, 1914, in Irwin Township, Venango County, a son of the late H. Ralph and Lillian Mae (Greene) Gibb.
Ray graduated from Clintonville High School in 1931. He received a normal school diploma from Slippery Rock State College in 1934. He attended night and summer school while teaching regularly and also received a bachelor's in secondary education from Slippery Rock State College in 1945. In 1952, he earned his master's in school administration from the University of Pittsburgh and was admitted as a member of Phi Delta Kappa, an honorary organization recognizing school administrators.
Mr. Gibb began his teaching career in a one-room country school in Butler County in 1934. During his 32 years in public education, he served in various types of teaching and administration in Butler, Beaver, Westmoreland, Lawrence and York counties. In 1968 he retired from the position as district superintendent of Red Lion Area Schools. From 1968 to 1979, he served as educational representative for the Grolier Educational Corp. in Delaware, Md., and Washington D.C.
Ray at one time had served as president of the Midwestern District Association of Chief School Administrators. He also served for two years as president of the Butler County Council of Christian Education.He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Red Lion, the F&AM Red Lion Lodge 649 and the Ancient Scottish Rite Lodge Council Chapter Consistory, Valley of New Castle.Mr. Gibb is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Short and her husband, Tom, and Barbara Fake; two sons, William Gibb and his wife, Ellen, and Robert Gibb and his wife, Jean; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.A daughter, Carol Harding Safer; and a brother, Charles Gibb, preceded him in death.
<B>GIBB </B>—A celebration of life service for Raymond E. Gibb, who died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2010, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 30 in the social area of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 45 First Ave., Red Lion. A visitation will be from 1 to 1:30 p.m. that day.
