PINE TWP, Mercer County — A hearing regarding the possible reopening of the Tri-County Landfill on Route 208 near the Prime Outlet Mall will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Grove City High School.

The hearing is by the Pine Township Zoning Board

Arguments both for and against the landfill will be presented by attorneys representing various groups.

Tri-County last year asked Pine Township for a variance to construct a 99-acre landfill and the township's zoning officer denied it.

Liberty Township also heard arguments earlier this week about the landfill.

PITTSBURGH — Federal officials have fined U.S. Steel and a subcontractor a total of $175,000 for safety violations found after a coke plant explosion injured at least 15 workers.The Occupational Safety and Health Administration announced Thursday it cited the companies following a probe of the July 14 explosion at the Clairton Coke Works near Pittsburgh.OSHA says the companies failed to provide effective energy control procedures and exposed workers to burns.U.S. Steel was penalized $143,500 for two willful and 11 serious violations. Power Piping was fined $31,500 for six serious violations.

WASHINGTON — New cars and trucks will need to have larger and stronger side air bags to prevent motorists from being tossed out of their vehicles in rollover crashes.The Transportation Department says the new requirements are aimed at protecting motorists in rollovers. More than 8,000 people were killed in rollovers in 2009, according to the most recent data available.The new requirements are the latest attempt to address the dangerous crashes. The Bush administration required car companies to put anti-rollover technology called Electronic Stability Control on new vehicles.The changes to the air bags are expected to prevent nearly 400 deaths and nearly 500 serious injuries every year.Car companies will begin phasing in the changes in 2013 and all new cars will be required to have the protections by 2018.
