Crowley

James A. Crowley, 85, of Butler, formerly of Rimersburg, died Thursday evening at Concordia at the Orchard, Butler, following a lengthy illness.

Born Sept. 2, 1926, in Bradys Bend, he was the son of the late Alfred and Amy Helen (Jordan) Crowley.

He graduated from East Brady High School.

He was a Roman Catholic and was a member of St. Andrew Church in Butler, where he taught religious education classes for more than 25 years.

After working as a camp train cook for seven years, he was employed by United States Steel for 35 years in Boyers until his retirement in 1988.

He actively volunteered his time in the Butler community after his retirement.

He was a past president and a member of the Lions Club for many years where he was honored by having bestowed on him the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, Lions International's highest recognition for humanitarian ideas consistent with the nature and purpose of “Lionism.”

Jim also was active in the Butler's Fourth of July Freedom Celebration for many years.

On June 30, 1951, he married Elva Mittiga.

He is survived by one son, Steve Crowley and his wife, Deb, of Oil City; two grandchildren, Royd Crowley of Oil City and Kara Spangler and her husband, John, of Clarion; his brother, Eugene “Red” Crowley of Rimersburg; and his sister, Evelyn Hosey of Hobe Sound, Fla.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Vince Crowley, and one brother, William Crowley.

Crowley, who died Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011, may pay their respects to the family from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at St. Andrew Roman Catholic Church, 1660 N. Main St. Ext., Butler. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at the church. The Rev. James Salberg, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Saint Eusebius Cemetery, East Brady.The <B>Geibel Funeral Home</B>, 201 E.
