PARKER, Armstrong County — The Parker Polar Bear Club will sponsor its annual Polar Bear Plunge Saturday.

Registration begins at noon and is $10, which includes a T-shirt.

The jump will take place at 2 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

The event benefits the Hunt of a Lifetime: Camo Cares, a program that sponsors hunting trips for terminally ill children, as well as Leadership Butler County and the Parker City Fire Department.

The event takes place on the Allegheny River at Parker's Landing Canoe, Kayak and Outfitter, 311 N. River Ave.

Free adult basic education classes are scheduled for Butler County beginning next week. They run through May 31.Classes offer individual instruction for those who want to learn to read, write or speak English, or to develop other basic skills. Participants may also prepare for the GED test.Classes at Pennsylvania CareerLink, which is located at the Pullman Commerce Center, begin Monday. They are scheduled for Mondays and Wednesdays, from 9 a.m. to noon.The Family First Resource Center, 216 N. Washington St. in Butler, will offer two different class times. Students may take classes from 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays, or from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays.In Slippery Rock, classes will be held at the Slippery Rock Recreation Center at 320 N. Main St. from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.The classes are sponsored by Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV, an education organization based in Grove City.
