Fatigued Mars girls fall to Vikings
ADAMS TWP — The Mars girls basketball team finished its own tournament on fumes.
The Planets were tied with Hopewell at halftime of Tuesday night's championship game, but they scored just 12 points in the second half as the Vikings grabbed a 46-36 win.
Mars shot four-of-21 (19 percent) from the field in the third and fourth quarters.
“I felt like we had good shots most of the night, but we didn't finish plays,” said Planets coach Tony Howard. “Our legs aren't quite where they need to be.”
Kelsey Pelles managed a three-point play early in the third quarter that gave the Planets (4-4) a three-point edge.
But Hopewell went on a 14-1 run to take a 38-28 lead with 7:15 left in the game.
Three-pointers by Alexa Lee and Carly Clark put Mars back in the game, but the Planets scored just two points in the last 4:47.
“We make sure our kids are conditioned, even in the offseason,” said Vikings coach Jeff Homziak. “We strive to wear our opponent down in the second half, and that was the case tonight.”
Having Shatori Walker-Kimbrough at their disposal didn't hurt the Vikings, either.
The eventual MVP of the tournament scored a game-high 17 points. No other Hopewell player scored more than seven.
“Normally, we enter a game with a goal of giving up less than 40 points,” said Howard. “We feel if we can do that, we give ourselves a pretty good shot at winning.
“But facing a star like (Walker-Kimbrough), we knew we would have to score a bit more tonight,” he added. “But take away a few transition baskets that they got and I was pleased with our defense tonight.”
Mars did force the Vikings (4-4) into 14 combined turnovers in the second and third quarters.
Meghan Kelly led Mars with 13 rebounds and three blocked shots.
Making the All-Tournament Team for the Planets were Lee (14 points) and Pelles (13), who combined for 27 points in Tuesday's game.
Hopewell's Shaniya Rivers also was named to the team.
