Big fight may be in Minto's future

CENTER TWP — TV or title shot.

Veteran Butler cruiserweight boxer Brian Minto might get one or the other within the next few months, manager Pat Nelson said Monday.

Minto (35-4, 22 knockouts) has only two pro bouts as a cruiserweight — including his second-round victory over Pierre Karam (18-3) Oct. 29 at Ghost Riders — but he could be in line for his second world title fight in that division.

“He’s ranked 15th by the WBC and has their Continental Americas belt,” Nelson said. “Brian is a veteran guy and some opportunities could be opening up.”

Minto’s camp is looking at Danny Green (31-3, 27 KO), the IBO champion from Australia, and Krzyaztof Wlodarczyk (44-2, 32 KO’s), the WBC champion from Poland. Green hasn’t fought since Nov. 17. Wlodarczyk is scheduled to face unbeaten Francisco Palacios in a title defense April 2.

“My goal is to get a title fight sometime in 2011,” Minto said. “That’s been my goal ever since I lost to (WBO champion Marco) Huck in Germany.”

Palacios is ranked 28th by boxrec.com. Minto is ranked 31st.

“It’s 50-50 between Brian‘s next fight being for a world title or being the main event at a show in Kittanning,” Nelson said.

Belmont Arena might host a pro fight card in mid-April that could be televised on ESPN2’s “Friday Night at the Fights.” The card could wind up being just a club show as well.

Nelson said Danny Santiago (31-4) of Florida is the opponent Minto’s camp wants for an ESPN2 telecast.

“Getting on TV again while fighting locally would be fine with me,” Minto said.

Santiago was scheduled to fight Roy Jones Jr. in October before a rib injury forced Jones to pull out.

The 37-year-old Santiago’s most recent two losses were in light heavyweight world title bouts. He was stopped in the fourth round by Antonio Tarver for the IBO title in December 2007. Shortly before that, Santiago lost to Zsolt Erdei in an eighth-round TKO for the WBO crown.

“We couldn’t afford Santiago without the television money,” Nelson admitted. “If it’s a club show, we’ll find another opponent for Brian.

“The (Belmont) arena show couldn’t happen until middle April because they wait until early April to melt their ice there.”

Minto suffered a laceration above an eye in the Karam fight, but that has healed on schedule. Nelson said he should know Minto’s next opponent within 30 days.

Minto turns 36 on Jan. 27. He’s fully confident he’ll get at least one more crack at winning a world title belt.

“This business is kinda funny,” he said. “The phone could ring at anytime if somebody falls out of a title fight because of an injury.

“I’m ready and I’ve learned from my mistakes. I’m training and I’m being patient.”
