Cold-shooting Butler run down by Colts
BUTLER TWP — The Butler girls basketball team has its rematch with Hopewell.
But the Golden Tornado don't have the game they wanted.
Sinking only 9 of 42 field goal attempts, Butler suffered a 61-42 drubbing at the hands of Chartiers Valley Friday night in the first round of the Tornado's tip-off tournament.
“We can't fall behind against teams because we‘re not a team that's going to score a lot,” Butler coach Dorothea Epps said.
Her team trailed throughout and will face Hopewell, a 50-45 loser to Upper St. Clair, in the consolation game at 4 p.m. Saturday. The Vikings handed the Tornado a 68-53 loss in the championship game of the Butler Tip-Off Tournament a year ago.
Both teams look radically different now. Hopewell started four sophomores against USC after reaching the WPIAL Class AAA championship game last season. Butler point guard Caitlin Baxter is its lone returning starter from a perfect section season.
“Most of these girls sat on the bench last year watching players like Olivia Bresnahan and Casie Cygan do their thing,” Epps said. “This is a learning process.”
Chartiers Valley finished 23-6, also was perfect in section play and lost in the WPIAL semifinals to Hopewell. The Colts also have seen plenty of changes to their lineup.
“Six of the seven players in our rotation last year graduated,” CV coach Spencer Stefko said. “This was a nice start for us, but we provided match-up problems for Butler. That was a big part of this game.”
The Colts took a 32-20 lead into halftime, sinking 12 of 17 shots from the floor, including four 3-pointers, during the first two quarters.
“They're guard oriented and much quicker than us,” Epps said. “We're bigger this year and have some forwards, but we couldn't pack into a zone against them because they shoot the ball so well.”
Freshman Emily Eyth came off the bench to hit a 3-pointer for Butler early in the third quarter. A Mackenzie O'Donnell free throw cut the gap to 33-24 midway through the period, but the Colts responded with a 14-0 run to put the game out of reach.
Freshman Lauren Herron came off the bench to hit two treys and another jumper during the run.
“We lost Ali (Sedwick) early in this game and she's one of our biggest scoring threats,” Epps said. “Emily can give us an outside shot, so we had to go to her in that third quarter.”
Sedwick suffered a knee injury and is out indefinitely.
Baxter led Butler with 14 points, Eyth and Jasmine Bailey had eight each. O'Donnell and Shelby Johnston had six of 29 Butler rebounds.
Kassidy O'Keefe led Chartiers Valley with 16 points and Lexy Herron had 10.
Butler had 19 turnovers to CV's 18.
“We played nervous, were hesitant to shoot and had some unforced errors early,” Epps said. “I know we're going to go through growing pains and that's OK as long as we work hard.”
