Mildred Fisher Wiley of JamesonPlace, New Castle, passed away Monday morning.

Born Sept. 3, 1913, in Salem, Ohio, she graduated from Waynesburg College in 1935 and was married for 57 years to Asa G. Wiley, who died in March 1995.

Survivors include a son, Dr. Richard G. Wiley of Skaneateles, N.Y.; two daughters, Nancy A. Book of Slippery Rock and Dr. Susan Wiley Hardwick of Eugene, Ore.; a brother, Francis Fisher of State College; a sister, Jeanne Seeds of Fort Myers, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Wiley taught English at Greensburg High School for two years and at Laurel High School for 13 years, where she was the head of the English department and founder of the National Honor Society of which she was a faculty sponsor for 10 years.

Mrs. Wiley retired from Laurel in 1973, and became active in community affairs in Slippery Rock for many years thereafter. She served as secretary and vice president of the Slippery Rock Women's Club and was instrumental in bringing the national Meals on Wheels program to the area. She also worked for the Community Blood Bank and was awarded the Town and Gown Award for service to the community and region in 1973.

In addition, Mildred Wiley was an active member of the Highland Presbyterian Church in Slippery Rock for 25 years and was president of the Women's Association of the church. She also was a member of Paws and Taws Square Dancing Club for more than a decade.

After retiring to Florida with her husband following both their retirements from the education field, Mrs. Wiley moved back to Pennsylvania from Tarpon Springs, Fla., to JamesonPlace in New Castle. She thereafter became a member of the Clen-More Presbyterian Church, where she was a regular participant in the Irvine Bible Class.

<B>WILEY</B> — Visiting hours for Mildred Fisher Wiley, who died Monday, Nov. 1, 2010, will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the <B>SMITH FUNERAL HOME</B>, 310 W. Neshannock Ave., New Wilmington. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Clen-More Presbyterian Church, 220 Clen-More Blvd., New Castle, with the Rev. Chris Weichman, of the church, officiating. Interment will follow at the Westmoreland County Memorial Park, Greensburg.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Clen-More Presbyterian Church; or to her alma mater, Waynesburg University, Attn. Paul R. Stewart Society.
