Raiderhockey smarting from 8-0 setback

WARRENDALE — Shots on goal haven't been a problem for North Allegheny. Scoring goals has.

Until Wednesday night.

The Tigers found the net just seven seconds into the game and never let up in posting an 8-0 PIHL victory over Seneca Valley at Warrendale BladeRunners.

NA (4-1-1) won the opening faceoff and immediately broke through the Raiders' defense. Joe Griffin's wrist shot was stopped by SV goaltender Mike Singel, but Eric Barger beat Singel on the rebound.

The Tigers went on to outshoot the Raiders 42-12. The mercy clock ran in the third period as NA had a 7-0 lead after two frames.

“They killed us. We were embarrassed tonight,” SV coach Denis Kirstein said. “But we've got a lot of new players and we have to grow together as a team.

“One of my favorite sayings is that it takes a little sunshine and a little rain for a plant to grow. We faced some adversity tonight. We'll see how we respond.”

Seneca Valley (1-5) reached the Penguins Cup Class AAA finals the past two years, but dropped its fourth straight game Wednesday. The Raiders have been outscored 32-13 so far this season.

“Only one of our games has been close,” Kirstein said. “We've been losing by four goals or so. That's a concern.”

The eight goals allowed Wednesday marked a season-high.

“Outshooting teams has been the norm for us,” NA assistant coach Dan Lagiovane said. “We outshot Baldwin by a 3-1 margin and only won by three goals.

“Tonight, the pucks went in for is. Maybe it was the big crowd or the fact we were playing a rival, I don't know, but I'm surprised by this score. I'd have been happy with a 1-0 win.”

Lagiovane ran the team Wednesday while head coach James Black sat out a one-game suspension.

Seneca Valley was 0-for-4 on the power play as NA netminder Matt Goda picked up his third shutout of the season. He entered the game with a 1.69 goals-against average.

The Raiders' best scoring opportunity occurred with 5:10 left in the opening period. Chris Marziotto fed the puck across the goalmouth to teammate Cody Siegfried on a 2-on-1 break, but Goda slid across to make the save.

Siegfried leads Seneca Valley with five goals this season. No one else on the team has scored more than one.

“All of us have to adjust our styles right now,” Kirstein said. “We coaches have to adjust to our new players and they have to adjust to us.

“We can figure this thing out. It's early yet and we have an awesome bunch of kids in this room. We really want to win. We're just not doing the things necessary to win.”

Barger and Cody Black scored a pair of goals for North Allegheny. Matt Neurohr, Jake Hubert, Harry Kramer and Griffin added one each. Griffin leads the team with five goals.

All four of the Tigers' wins have been by a three-goal margin or greater. NA scored on two of seven power play chances.

“We only have five seniors, yet we're a seasoned team,” Lagiovane said. “If we continue to progress, we feel we have what it takes to play in the Consol Energy Center (for the Penguins Cup).

“But that's a long way off. There's plenty of games to be played and plenty of good teams out there.”

Kirstein still believes Seneca Valley can be one of them.

“I really do,” he said. “We didn't keep this one close and we lost control of things. We lost our mental edge, the coaches didn't execute line changes well from the bench ... All 22 of us had a bad game tonight.

“We've got time to fix it. We're gonna work on it.”
