Playoff lives lost

Moniteau's Ethan Pry (82) misses the last chance to gain a first down of the season under pressure from Brookville's Derek Shattenberg (20) and Brock Boetz (84) in the IAA D-9 Class AA semi-fonal football game at Clarion on Saturday.

CLARION — Moniteau seemingly had nine lives Saturday night — and took advantage of none of them.

Brookville's defense wouldn't let it.

The Raiders overcame numerous missed chances offensively by holding the Warriors to five first downs while posting a 14-7 District 9 Class AA football playoff win at Clarion University's Memorial Stadium.

“We couldn't get anything going,” Moniteau coach Jeff Campbell said. “We dropped a number of passes out there and that's hurt us all year.

“We thought we could make some plays against them in the passing game. Those plays were there. We didn't execute.”

Moniteau's lone touchdown drive was on a series it didn't drop passes. After avoiding a potential 14-0 deficit when Tyler Fleeger recovered a Brookville fumble at the Warriors' 4-yard line with 3:22 left in the half, Moniteau drove 96 yards in six plays to tie the game.

Dustin Geagan's 23-yard tun got Moniteau (5-6) our of trouble. Kyle Armagost then hit Ethan Pry with a 42-yard strike downfield before finding Pry again for a 31-yard touchdown strike.

That sudden turn of events epitomized the dayfor Brookville, which repeatedly missed chances to put the Warriors away.

“I'm glad our kids didn't play as nervous as I felt,” Brookville coach Chris Dworek admitted.

The Raiders (9-2) drove inside Moniteau's 10-yard line four times in the first half, but came away with only one score.

Their first possession reached the Moniteau 8-yard line, but consecutive quarterback sacks by Joe Holfelder and Drew Yeckel — assisted by Joey Deal — forced a turnover on downs.

Fleeger's fumble recovery ended another threat and after Deal and Brock Beitz exchanged interceptions, Cam Yard missed a 25-yard field goal attempt as the first half expired.

Steve Kennedy had a 55-yard touchdown pass to Sebastian Kerr wiped out by a holding penalty in the third quarter. A fumbled snap cost Yard a 33-yard field goal attempt that would have iced the game with 4:12 to play.

Brookville compiled 18 first downs and had a 486-145 edge in total yardage.

“We were dominating play, but when you have Kyle Armagost on the other side and they're one play away from a tie ... That's uncomfortable,” Dworek said.

Ryan Kerr had 36 carries for 197 yards and both Brookville touchdowns. He scored on runs of 2 and 27 yards.

“Ryan had a lot of bounce in his step during warmups,” Dworek said. “In all my years of coaching, he has the top two carry totals in a game. That kid is a workhorse.”

By contrast, Moniteau managed just 52 yards rushing as a team.

“They made some defensive adjustments from the last time we played them. There was no running room,” Campbell said. “Our defense made enough key plays to keep us in there.

“All we wanted to do was be able to hang around, make a play or two to win in the end. It didn't happen for us.”

Armagost finished the season with 1,336 yards passing and 1,146 rushing, but managed only 93 and 22 Saturday.

Brookville plays Brockway for the District 9 championship at 7 p.m. Friday at Memorial Stadium.
