Planets reach soccer semifinal
DUBOIS — Blair Gerlach will admit he didn't know much about Bradford.
That apparently didn't seem to slow down the Mars girls soccer team.
Dana Wonderly and Mani Brueckner scored 20 seconds apart 15 minutes into Saturday's PIAA Class AA quarterfinal playoff game en route to a 6-0 victory at DuBois High School.
With the win, the Planets (24-0) will face Mercyhurst Prep (20-0-3), — a 3-0 winner over Beaver Saturday — at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Neshannock High School.
“We went into the game kind of blind. No film, no info,” said Gerlach. “We just saw a few scores. We didn't know their key players.
“We went in with the attitude that they didn't seem to have a lot of games against better teams. They played tough early. Thirteen or 14 minutes into the game, they had to press forward and that opened things up,” Gerlach added.
Wonderly and Brueckner's tallies got the Planets rolling, then Crysta Ganter added a third goal late in the first half and Karli Paracca early in the second half to open up a 4-0 lead on the District 9 champions (15-6-1).
Brueckner and Kara Angeletti would add goals later to close out the scoring.
Now, the Planets will turn their attention to the District 10 champion Lakers.
“I know players on their team very well,” said Gerlach. “Their coach (Pedro Argaez) and I do a lot of things together. With me being so involved with (elite club) Northern Steel Soccer and (Argaez with the Erie Admirals), we spend a lot of weekends together with other elite programs.
“I know, without a doubt, they are the most talented team we've played all year. they're a quality team and they didn't get there because teams around them aren't good. They would be good in any district,” Gerlach added.
The Lakers, according to Gerlach, play three forwards, which is something different than most teams employ.
“I know what matchups we could exploit,” said Gerlach. “Both teams will get chances, but we'll see who finishes those chances.”
The biggest difference Gerlach sees between the two teams? Experience.
“They have 12 seniors and eight of them start,” said Gerlach. “We've got six seniors and we start three, sometimes four.
“I know we'll be at least as good next year and he'll lose most of his players ... His entire 11 start for the Admirals,” Gerlach added.
Alex Perri scored for the Planets, but it wasn't enough as Mars fell to Palmyra, 3-1, in the PIAA Class AA quarterfinals at Hollidaysburg High School Saturday. The loss marked the third time in four years Palmyra has knocked Mars out of the PIAA playoffs. No other details were available.
