Freeport mauled by Lions
JACKSON TWP — Freeport showed Friday it could move the ball against South Fayette — but not as well as the Lions.
South Fayette's WPIAL-best offense was on display when the Lions scored four touchdowns in a span of 3 minutes, 17 seconds span bridging the second and third quarters to post a 47-13 WPIAL Class AA quarterfinal victory at Seneca Valley.
Lions quarterback Christian Brumbaugh threw for 325 yards and three touchdowns, and rushed for another.
Leading rusher Jeff Davis caught two scoring passes and rushed for two more scores to help South Fayette total 511 yards.
“We had to come out and roll the dice and try and put the pressure on (Brumbaugh),” said Freeport coach John Gaillot.
“We hoped to get some stunts and blitzes. We were bringing the heat, but their quarterback is very good. He bought time and got some people open,” Gaillot added.
“You never know what you're going to get,” said Lions coach Joe Rossi on opponents. “Sometimes teams are not accustomed to our offense.”
An interception on the opening drive by Yellowjackets quarterback Brendan Lynch help set up a 1-yard scoring run by Davis to give the Lions (11-0) a 6-0 lead.
Freeport tried to answer with a 12-play drive, but on third-and-goal from the SF 9, the Yellowjackets had consecutive illegal substitution penalties to push them back to the 19.
After an incomplete pass, Cody McClelland missed a 36-yard field goal attempt.
South Fayette needed four plays to double its lead, thanks to a 79-yard slot screen pass from Brumbaugh to Zach Challingsworth with 50 seconds left in the first quarter.
Freeport ran 13 plays on its next drive, but Lynch was stopped on a fourth-and-1 at the SF 12.
The teams exchanged turnovers before South Fayette started to assume control of the game.
Brumbaugh threw a 28-yard scoring pass to Davis, which had been preceded by a 25-yard catch by Tyler Challingsworth and a personal-foul penalty by Freeport.
The Yellowjackets (7-4) finally broke through when Derek Durand pulled in a 44-yard scoring pass from Lynch to cap a five-play, 64-yard drive to make it 20-6 with 42 seconds left in the half.
That was enough time for the Lions to get another score before the break. Brumbaugh completed passes of 12, 27 and 47 yards before scoring from 3 yards out on the final play to give the Lions a 27-6 lead.
A 60-yard touchdown run by Davis on the second play of the second half, followed by a 26-yard touchdown pass to Davis on the third play of the team's next drive opened a 41-6 advantage and began the mercy rule clock with 10:16 left in the third quarter.
“We knew at halftime we were getting the ball in the second half,” said Brumbaugh, who finished with 12-of-17 passing, including completions on 11 of his final 13 attempts, for 307 yards. “We were saying, ‘We gotta score here, we gotta score here.' That was huge.”
“With their quarterback, they made plays,” said Gaillot. “There's so many of them. who's their best receiver — all five of them.”
South Fayette added another score with 2:33 to play after a 14-play drive that covered 64 yards, culminating on a John Lerda 1-yard run.
Freeport closed out the scoring on a 79-yard touchdown pass to Durand with 43 seconds remaining.
“I'm proud of the kids the way they battled back after the Deer Lakes game and beat Jeannette (30-22 in last week's first-round game),” said Gaillot. “That was huge. ... The kids played hard all year.”
Notes: McClelland left the game in the second half with a concussion ... Durand pulled in six passes for 163 yards and finished the year with 34 for 845 yards and nine TD. Lynch completed 60-of-122 passes for 1,302 yards, 12 touchdowns and four interceptions. ... With his performance Friday, Brumbaugh has thrown more than 5,800 yards in his varsity career.
