Rough week for county squads in postseason
It’s crunch time.
No, seriously, it’s Cap’n Crunch time. I love that cereal.
But on to more pressing matters.
It really is crunch time in the high school football playoffs in the WPIAL, District 9 and District 10.
No more do-overs. No more next week for these dudes should they trip up.
The finality of it all is palpable. I’m getting eagle bumps.
Of course, I’m ready for the playoffs after posting a 6-1 week and a season record of 87-19.
This is a tough week to predict, but I’ll try:
•
Knoch 22, Central Valley 19 The Knights face a team that is brand new this season.Central Valley is a consolidation of the former Monaca and Center high schools, and, with 30 seniors, it has plenty of depth on the roster. The Warriors enter the game on roll, too, after knocking off No. 3 seed Ringgold in what many considered a major upset. No upsets this Friday. It’ll be close very close but the Knights will find a way to keep their playoff drive alive.•
West Allegheny 22, Mars 21 The WPIAL quarterfinal round has not been kind to the Planets, sort of like a giant meteorite, nuclear war or drastic climate change would not be kind to our planet.Mars has reached this round of the WPIAL playoffs four straight years. It’s 0-4 in those contests.Sorry, Mars, I have to go with precedent here. Prove me wrong and I will make it up to you in this column next week.•
South Fayette 32, Freeport 14 Gotta love those Yellowjackets. They play an uneven game in the season finale against Summit Academy and then go out and put a hurtin’ on Jeannette in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs. This week, the surprising Yellowjackets get South Fayette. It’ll be tough to pull off two stunners two weeks in a row, but part of me would not be surprised if they did.•
Brookville 31, Moniteau 22 The Warriors have a way of beating Brookville in the playoffs.Moniteau is a tough team to figure out. One week they Warriors look like they can’t lose. The next week, turnovers, penalties and other assorted miscues make you wonder if they can ever win.Which Moniteau team is going to show up against Brookville? That is the question. While I would not be surprised if the good Warriors show up, I would be shocked if the bad ones do.•
Grove City on a bye For the first time in school history the Eagles are 10-0. As a reward, they get the week off to bask in the glow of their undefeated regular season and prepare for the District 10 Class AAA semifinals. They deserved it.Scoop was fined $50,000 by the NFL for a beak-to-beak hit in the mascot game.
