Board discusses purchases
SAXONBURG — South Butler School board members Wednesday night discussed two technology purchases.
First, Gleason Insurance Agency representative Robert Zedreck presented information on cyberliability insurance.
Zedreck offered the board $500,000 of coverage for $9,490 annually to protect the district if private, computerized information is lost or stolen. The policy carries a $15,000 deductible.
"Really, what you're paying for here is legal or defense, which goes up in a hurry," Zedreck said.
The board asked Matthew Cimbala, technology committee chairman, to review the proposal. Cimbala is a cybersecurity professional.
On a second issue, Jacqueline Pfeiffer, board member, recommended the board accept an agreement with Esber Cash Register for online payment software so parents can electronically deposit students' cafeteria funds.
Esber waived the system's purchase price, but it comes with an annual $450 maintenance fee.
In addition, parents would be charged a 5.75 percent transaction fee each time they add money to their student's account.
Board members agreed the transaction fee is "hefty," and parents may continue to pay by check if they so choose.
The system allows parents to see what their children eat while they're at school.
"Some parents didn't know their children were eating breakfast at home and at school," Pfeiffer said.
Board members will vote on the system on Nov. 10.
Pfeiffer said the school's new breakfast program is becoming more popular among all its students.
More than 90 primary school students participate, especially those in the free and reduced lunch program.
The district has 600 primary students.
The school board's Nov. 10 meeting will be the final one for Superintendent Frank Prazenica, who is retiring.
"It's just been tremendous," Prazenica said of his tenure.
Dale Lumley, assistant superintendent, will replace him in December.
