Moniteau leans on versatile Armagost

Moniteau quarterback Kyle Armagost serves many roles for the Warriors.

CHERRY TWP — If it takes a licking and keeps on ticking, that's a dependable watch.

Take a beating and keep repeating — that's Moniteau quarterback Kyle Armagost.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound junior has taken part in 71 percent of the Warriors' offensive production this season and has been held below 100 yards rushing or passing in a game only once.

Armagost has thrown for 1,100 yards and 10 touchdowns. He has run for 882 yards and 11 scores. He has thrown and run for over 100 yards against Brookville, Redbank Valley and Keystone.

Armagost also leads the Warriors with 85 tackles, shares the team lead with 58 solo tackles, has two interceptions, blocked two field goals, averages 42 yards per punt, 21 yards on 11 punt returns and 33 yards on six kickoff returns.

"At a coaches meeting early in the season, I said we had to get more players involved or Kyle wasn't going to last the season," said Randy Armagost, Kyle's father and Moniteau's offensive coordinator.

"Most of his rushing yards are on option plays. He should probably pitch the ball half the time, but he chooses to keep it," he added.

Moniteau coach Jeff Campbell shrugs at the notion that his quarterback is too involved.

"That kid is tough as nails," Campbell said. "I've seen him take shots that most kids wouldn't get up from. Kyle just goes back to the huddle.

Armagost's older brother, Tyler, preceded Kyle as Moniteau's quarterback. Tyler now is an assistant coach on the staff.

"When I was playing junior high football, Tyler was teaching me all of the plays," Kyle said. "He gave me a big head start on things. When I come off the field on Friday nights, he's up in the booth telling me what he's seeing."

The younger Armagost grew up watching game films with his father on weekends.

"By the time he was a freshman, he could probably read defenses and pick up tendencies on film more than Tyler could," Coach Armagost said. "He's just football smart."

"Definitely a coach's son. ... He knows the game inside and out," Campbell agreed.

Kyle Armagost is so football smart that he runs the scout team offense in practice to help Moniteau's defense prepare for its next opponent.

The quarterback knows who to credit for his own productivity as well: his offensive line.

Chester Gladd is a 270-pound left tackle. Ryan Pflugh and Matt Staab are seniors at left guard, and Staab also plays some right guard with fellow senior Nick Summerville. Jordan Smith is a senior center, and sophomore Kyle Davidson is at right tackle.

"I get nowhere without those guys," Armagost admitted.

As for absorbing hits on both sides of the ball, Armagost said his brother proved helpful there, too.

"I've taken beatings at home all my life," he said, laughing. "I have an older brother who beat me up all the time. I guess he toughened me up, too."

Armagost plays strong safety on defense, but lines up at different points all over the field.

"He reads things so well that I leave a lot of decisions in his hands, whether to attack the line of scrimmage or drop into coverage," Campbell said.

"We have our own Polamalu Package for Kyle, where he can line up wherever he wants to blitz the quarterback."

"It's just reading the play and reacting," Armagost said of his defensive prowess.

"Kyle's not a great quarterback. He's a great athlete," Campbell said. "We use that."
